Seva is the greatest but it should be selfless service. Mantra means literally the joy of the mind. The essence is guru kripa, the blessing of the guru. The first thing is the name of our Guru. We have 108 pearls in our mala and what adds up to 9 means completeness. If you have no trust in your guru it means that the thread of your mala is broken. From birth till death there are four kinds of ashrama - stages of life. The partner should be chosen by the parents. A rishi can only become sannyas (a renunciate) in the fourth, final ashram.
