The Levels of Consciousness and the Nature of Mind
The mind operates between conscious and subconscious levels, managing impressions and desires. Our five senses gather information from the world, which is recorded in our memory. These impressions move from the conscious to the subconscious, where they can later emerge as desires or vāsanās. The mind is the principle that transfers these impressions inward and brings desires outward. Unfulfilled desires stored in the subconscious can create problems over time. The intellect judges and identifies, but it can become corrupted. True discrimination, viveka, warns of consequences. We are often slaves to our senses, particularly taste and passion. Unending desire, tṛṣṇā, is a central affliction. The body dies, but attachments and desires do not; they persist like a shadow. Do not blindly follow the ever-changing mind.
"Man marā na mamatā marī, mar mar gayā śarīr. Asa tṛṣṇā na marī, kah gaye dās Kabīr."
"Man ke māte na chalye, gharipālak man aur."
