Holi - Festival of Colours, Part 2

The Holi festival celebrates the victory of devotion over ego and the churning of our inner consciousness. The story of Hiraṇyakaśipu and his son Prahlāda illustrates that faith protects the devotee. When the king's sister Holikā, who was immune to fire, sat in flames with Prahlāda in her lap, she burned because she acted against dharma, while the devoted child remained unharmed. This symbolizes the burning of negativity. The festival's colors represent the return of joy and a colorful life after truth's victory. The deeper meaning connects to the churning of the cosmic ocean, where both nectar and poison emerged. This churning occurs within us; our spiritual practice purifies the inner ocean to attain the nectar of immortality. Negative tendencies, like the Rākṣasas, crave the poison of power and sensory intoxication, while divine tendencies seek the nectar. True devotion requires unconditional love and the faith that God resides within every heart.

"I will be with you at all times, protect you, and it doesn’t matter where you are."

"Within you is the fountain of joy and within you is the ocean of bliss."

Satsaṅga hariyo. Śrī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī jaya. Śrī Śrī Devapurīśa Mahādeva kī jaya. Dharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandajī Bhagavān kī jaya. Satya Sanātana Dharma kī jaya. Hari Om Tat Sat, Hari Om Tat Sat. Japa karo, japa karo. This is the Mahā Mantra: Hari Om Tat Sat, Hari Om Tat Sat. Hari means the Lord, Viṣṇu, the universal one. That Hari is Om, and Om is Hari. Japa kar, japa kar. Practice, practice. Hari is Om, and Om is Hari. Tat Sat. Tat means 'that', and sat means 'the truth'. Only that is the truth. That is Oṁ or Hari Oṁ. Therefore, when you greet with "Hari Om," it means your consciousness is connected to the cosmic Om or Hari. Japa kāra means repeat, repeat, repeat. This is the Mahāmantra: Hari Om Tat Sat, Hari Om Tat Sat, Hari Om Tat Sat. Blessings to you, dear bhaktas and spiritual seekers. Blessings on this divine occasion of Holi. The Holī festival is one of the major festivals in the histories of incarnations. Pavali is also a very great festival, like Holi and Guru Pūrṇimā. These are the three main ones, but from time to time, many great incarnations or personalities come. In memory of those, we have holidays, and we remember and celebrate. Yesterday, I spoke about what Holi means and the purpose of celebrating it—why this holy festival came. The story was about Hiraṇyakaśipu, a king who wanted to be immortal in his physical being. He wanted to rule this planet, Mother Earth, for all time. He performed great tapasyā, and God, Brahmā, came and asked him, "My son, blessings to you. I am pleased with your tapasyā. What can I give you?" He said, "Please bless me with immortality." God said, "Yes, you are immortal as Ātmā, but as a physical being you are mortal." But he insisted, "I want to be physically immortal." God said, "That’s not possible. You have ego, you have ambitions, you want to dominate, and that’s not possible. The law of nature is: who came has to go; what is created will be destroyed; what is made will be dissolved." Hiraṇyakaśipu was very disappointed. But God then gave him other blessings to fulfill his wishes. He asked: "Bless me that no natural death can take me away. The cause of my death should not be animals or humans. The cause of death should not be any weapons or elements. And I should not die inside the house or outside the house. Nor should death attack me in the daytime or in the nighttime." And God said, "So be it." Then I told you the whole story about the great son of Hiraṇyakaśipu, the Bhakta Prahlāda. When the name 'Bhakta' comes, Prahlāda is the first who comes to mind—a great Bhakta. The whole story was told yesterday in the webcast, so you can listen again. Yesterday was Holikā, the sister of Hiraṇyakaśipu. She had a siddhi to sit in the fire, and the fire would not burn her. Hiraṇyakaśipu forced his sister to take his son, Prahlāda, in her lap and sit in the fire. She said, "Okay, I will do it." She did it against dharma, against the law, against the will of God. Though she had great siddhi and spiritual power, when you go against dharma, your spiritual power is deleted. Your ambition and negative intellect pollute your consciousness. The result was that Holikā was burned. She died in the fire, and Prahlāda remained untouched by the fire. So yesterday was Holi, and the symbol of Holikā—her name—is a tree they burn. Beside it is a log or trunk of a tree which they put there, and that remains untouched by fire. That is a symbol of the devotee. Only Gurujī’s writing in Līlā Amṛt, Maa Prabhujī said, "I will make you immortal. If you are the devotee of God, then why are you scared? Why do you have doubts? Do you not trust me? I will be with you at all times, protect you, and it doesn’t matter where you are. At the time of your need, I personally will bring you all that you will need. I will provide, if you have that faith." Bhakta Hari kā sachā ho to kyō man mein ghabarāī? Therefore, many bhaktas' stories, like Prahlāda’s, are also very painful. His own father tried to throw him into a lake of crocodiles, into the middle of wild elephants, and from mountains, and so on. But Prahlāda came back without any harm or injuries. To whom God protects, no one can kill. Even if the whole world is against, and if God wants to protect, they cannot damage even one hair of that bhakta. A bhakta must have unconditional love, which means devotion. Everything can turn against, everything can turn round, everything can turn upside down, but my faith, my devotion, my love, O Gurudev, will remain. I can’t tell anything about others, but I tell myself that I will always be thine; a bhakta will always be thine. That is a deep confidence and devotion which resides in your heart. That devotion is radiating through your body. So yesterday, Holikā was burned and the Bhakta remained. Today, now they are all happy and celebrating. All are wishing everyone a happy Holi and a colorful life. Life turns again, colorful. As long as this Hiraṇyakaśipu was there, with his negativities—thinking he is all—everything was like sadness. But when he was gone and Holikā was gone, the Bhakta’s victory—satyameva jayate—the truth will win that victory. And now, today, they will all throw colors on each other. It means they will color your life, so life becomes colorful again. Everything is blossoming, and people dance. Again, you know, every festival is connected with eating. Are we not very expert? And mostly, what kind of eating? The sweets. More sweets come, and children like the sweets, and that’s something very important, very great, very good. So there is special preparation, special sweets for the Holi festival. And now, unfortunately, again come the kind of waves of negative thinking. Again, the asurīvṛttis, asuras, are what you call, maybe, the satanic, āsurikvṛtti. We know that in Satyuga, when the milk ocean was churned, there came fourteen ratnas. Ratna means jewels—something which is very precious. Out of the jewels, one was alcohol. One was the Kāmadhenu. One was the Airāvata with the seven trunks. And so this alcohol was also declared as something precious which came out. Alcohol is very precious. It is a great medicine. It is a great thing. But when you begin to abuse it, then it makes you stupid. Your vṛttis, your buddhi... but the Rākṣasas’ nature is to go towards alcohol. And the devas’ nature was to go towards nectar, sudhāras. Now, when the devas and the Rākṣasas came to know that this nectar comes out of the churning of the ocean, and those who drink it will be immortal... Now, even the devas, they also have ambitions. They would like to be immortal. Those who will drink that nectar will be ever young. Who doesn’t want to be ever young? There are some people like Divya Purī and me, who say, "Enough from this world. This all, my God, this all rubbish things, let’s go. Mahāprabhujī, enough, Mahāprabhujī, thank you. You show me this temptation, the glimpse of this your Māyā, this is your world. Let me go to the Brahma Loka." Mahāprabhujī said, "Guru varame chalusa shayantar jami me chalusa lo kalaj sabta jake kalapan lo kalaj sabta. O Gurudev, I want to go with you to that world." Which world? The world of immortality, Brahma Loka. Kalapana, all this gushing up of this world, doesn’t matter what people will talk about me or say about me, I don’t care. Tājike kalpanā, now I have no interest, no wishes, nothing. Dharke, vairāgya vais, let me be the vairāgī and follow you. Without vairāgya, you cannot follow. So, coming to this point, the devas also would like to be immortal, but Brahmā said no, Viṣṇu said also no, Śiva said also no. The devas said, "Yes, we would like to be immortal." Even Śiva said, "I also have my time. Then I have to go, again out of my self-manifestation, Svayambhū. I also have my own saṅkalpa that I will again do visarjan." Visarjan means to become one with the universe. Brahmā also has time. For so many years, yugas, and manvantaras, there is Brahmā’s time. Then Brahmā goes into retirement. And Viṣṇu also. The principle remains. Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Śiva, consciousness, ātmā, all merge into oneness. And there is still that principle, but this form is gone. Again, I will come and manifest it. Yuge, yuge, sambhavāmi. In every yuga, I will again come, O Arjuna, Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa. But devas would like to be more. Oh, that is something very interesting. "We drink this nectar, and we are immortal. Okay, let’s rule the heaven forever." But when one thinks forever, it’s never. It’s never forever. But take the benefit, the good things out of this time which you have. Chaltī nadī mein snān kar lo. In a flowing river, you can bathe in it, that’s all. Paani pi lo. Chalti nadi mein you drink water, that’s all. Water is going, flowing; life is going. But the ambitions... The nectar came last, finally. Alcohol came, and there were, you know, the Rākṣasas. Rākṣasas were dominating at that time. Rākṣasas said, "Oh, this is good, something for us. It makes energy strong," and so they took the alcohol, and they took this and that. This story is long, you know, from the Mahāśiv Purāṇa. When you come to the Bangkok airport, in the international transit area, there is a beautiful, beautiful monument of the churning of the ocean. One side is Rākṣasas and one side is Devas. It’s about, let’s say, 15 meters long or 20 meters long. Beautifully done. Many, many people are there taking pictures very nicely because Thailand has been the kingdom of God Rāma. As soon as the nectar came, they dropped everything there, took it, and ran. The Devas took it and ran, the Rākṣasas behind, they took it, there was a big fight and this and that. Indra, the god Indra, took it and ran away, but they all were... You know, this is money. Now this nectar is in Kali Yuga: money. All are fighting behind the money. Take it and go. That’s it. Big fight. Everyone wants to drink this nectar to be immortal, meaning to have their power here, their ruling power. Viṣṇu came. Viṣṇu also came, and Viṣṇu took it. But Viṣṇu had to protect, still had to protect the dharma. Rākṣasas, asura means adharma, and devas means dharma. In your body you have devas, that is your dharma, and in your body you have the tendencies of negativities, that is your asuras. The churning of the ocean is your consciousness, your body. Your spine is that in the churn, the stick. Sumeru, the mountain and ocean of your body, there is Sudhara in your navel, Viṣṇu. But if they will know it is Viṣṇu, then they will all be unhappy again. "Why did God interfere in our struggle?" Śiva was sitting and smiling. Look how they are all fighting. And in the beginning came the poison. So poison is also the jewel. Poison can save your life, and poison can kill you. Now the poison came. Oh God, they couldn’t breathe. All devas and rākṣasas are without energy, and it is said, "Where this poison will fall, everything will be destroyed." Now what to do? So they run to Śiva. Śiva told, "I told you, what you are doing is a poison for your life. But you did it with your ignorance. I will take it, give it to me." And Śiva drank that. Otherwise, this earth would not be here anymore. In Kali Yuga, that is a symbol of the atomic bomb. We manifested, we created the atomic bomb now, and that’s lying there. As soon as it is activated, it will destroy our earth, all the life on it. We need that kind of Śiva, that politician or scientist who can neutralize these atoms, these bombs lying there. Maybe some scientist, some expert, and some power, and some politicians, some personalities will come and understand and make a law, and around the whole world, all the atoms, weapons, and this should be somehow neutralized. But how? Question how? Only the one who can do, Śiva. And Śiva can incarnate as a scientist. So don’t think that Śiva will always be like this, have many cobras and sitting there. Who knows that some of you sitting here are Śiva? Śiva doesn’t have that. I am Śiva. You know, so who knows? Respect, careful. So Viṣṇu incarnated, he took the form called Mohinī, Mohinī, Apsarā Mohinī, like a heavenly dancer. See, Viṣṇu came as a beautiful lady with the water pot and said, "I will give everyone the nectar to drink." And this water pot had two parts inside. One side was nectar, and the other side, the same pot she is putting like this, for devas is coming nectar and for rākṣasas is coming alcohol. And those who drink, rākṣasas, they said, "We are happy, we got it, we got it." One of them realized, "Oh, the nectar is given only to devas, and this alcohol, this poison is coming to us." So he changed his form immediately and joined the devas. He entered, sat among the devas. Devas don’t know. And he came with his cup in front of Viṣṇu, and Viṣṇu was pouring nectar. Even Viṣṇu did not know, and he took it and he took one sip, and Viṣṇu realized, "This is the Rākṣasa." But some essence went to his navel. Whose navel? The Rākṣasa’s. Viṣṇu, within no time, took his Sudarśana Cakra, and the Rākṣasa wanted to run away and chip his head. Now, the Rākṣasa’s head and trunk became two parts, living. He said, "Viṣṇu, I am immortal now. Your Sudarśana Cakra cannot kill me." So that above became a Rāhu and down became a Ketu. Out of nine planets, two have got the Rākṣasas. Like in parliament, you have two seats, no? Or more seats. So they got, so Rāhu and Ketu have the position and influence your life and environment on this planet. When Rāhu, Ketu, and Saturn, these three come together, then you have a hard time, it can even cause death. At that time again, you have to have this mantra, and those who have this, there you have to change, make anuṣṭhāna to get this effect, influence, lay, Hari Om. And then, at that time, the Mahā Mṛtyuñjaya Mantra was given. That will save you from the influence of the planets Rāhu and Ketu, because, again, finally, Śiva is that one who can clarify and reach. But Rāhu and Ketu are living, so this is how the people, out of their greed, out of their ambition... Out of that negative intellect, to get that power inside, who are struggling for the power? The tendency of the power is for distraction. It suppresses everything. But God wants that out of this awakes another tendency, and that’s love. And when you love, then it is said you are not elected. But you are selected, no? When you walk on the beach, there are many, many shells lying, but you are looking, which one? Everybody says, "Oh, this is beautiful." So we select that, we don’t elect that. So it means your work, her work, or their work will be admired, and it will be said, "No, please, you take it in your hands." In previous times, in old times, people were requesting, all requesting, "Please, you become the mayor of the city, or you become the president of the country." They said, "No, please, give someone else." They said, "No, no, we all want that you are selected by God, selected by love, and elected by mine." And then come ambitions, and that one says, "I will support you, and I will not support them." But God wished Śiva, therefore Śiva said, "No, I will also support and protect the Rākṣasas." They are also living, they are also creation, and interesting is that Devas and Rākṣasas both are real brothers. You know this? Gyanānanda? Their real brother, the son of that one ṛṣi, who had 13, 13 or 23? I’ve forgotten wives, and one was the dominating one. And who was dominating? Her son. First one became the Rākṣasas, the other, Devas. Now, brother is fighting brother. So bhakti and jñāna, tyāga, tapasyā are the sons of our inner self, our ṛṣi, which is dharma. Ego, hate, doubt, jealousy, conflict, greed, these are born out of this ṛṣi as the Rākṣasas. Both are within us. To whom should I blame? They are in me. You clear up from your here and here, you are again having the nectar of the immortal. So, today, many people become crazy. So crazy, they are so drunken, and so many things happen. At that time, people were throwing a little butter or milk on you, or some colors, and giving you—drinking some mango shake, milk shake, banana shake, you know, good things. Things, nectar, but now they give you alcohol, and who knows what they’re missing. Many will die today, many will die out of low quality of alcohol, or what is it they call it, all manipulated. And many will take revenge, kill someone, and this and that, and then we don’t know, they were drunk and they were this. So, how can they, people, manipulate and misuse even the holy event? And that means the rākṣasabhṛtis: others are giving nice sweets, and nice milk, and fruits, and all the community comes together and celebrates. So this Holi festival was also a very loving festival because it is of Viṣṇu and Kṛṣṇa. So Krishna, who was playing with the colors, and there were so many gopīs and gopas, they were playing, and Krishna was throwing on them also the colors. So, once one said, "How can Kṛṣṇa do this?" And then he said, "Okay, go and see." But he said, "How many gopīs? That many Kṛṣṇa? How many gopīs, that many Kṛṣṇa with each?" That cannot be possible. Then they asked, "Where is he?" Afterward, they said, "Okay, he will be maybe sitting in that room with that gopī." He went there, opened the door. Yeah, he is sitting and eating. He went to the next door. Yes, he was there, he was having a milk drink. He opened the second door. He was there and just giving satsaṅg. Every door he opens, there is sitting Kṛṣṇa inside. So he said, "Now, which is the Kṛṣṇa and which is not the Kṛṣṇa?" So it means in our every heart is sitting God. You can open any heart; God is sitting inside. Now, ātmā is in you. All you are is ātmā, which is the real ātmā. All is real ātmā. That is in one place. But our duality, our lower level of consciousness, cannot realize it. And therefore, there is happiness, and there are beautiful songs about Holi festivals, and people are very happy, dancing and celebrating. It’s a colorful festival, colorful. Now you will see also many Indian communities here. They have a Holi festival, and then they will put the color here, and they will put a color here, and they will throw the color on you, and this and that. And it’s also a festival where you give many things to the poor. You give them so that they are also happy and they can also celebrate, can do something. So Holi, Diwali, Guru Pūrṇimā, Rām Navamī, the nine days of Mother, for everyone is a festival. There is a one-day festival for the Nag Devta, the snake. We call it Nāg Pañcamī. There is a festival of the trees, Vasant Pañcamī. Every day is some kind of divine day. If we keep this in our mind every day, we have divine things. Now, today I talked about this, and when you will meditate, you will think of the Dīvālī or Holī, colors and nice. When you sleep, you will think, "Oh, the Holī was very nice." And if you will go and hear something negative, then while meditating you will have negative vṛttis. Like Umāpurī told yesterday, if you see on television some horror films, then after, though you meditate, you see these artificially made rākṣasas, you know, and then it’s a big snake. And then when you sleep, it’s still going in your mind, and you may have a bad dream. So how is our consciousness projecting our vṛttis in that form to lead us to the asurī śaktis or daivī śaktis? So all the festivals, even the festivals of the Rākṣasas, yes, and that is also respected. And control the Rākṣasas’ vṛttis to develop in them the positive vṛttis. Now, this Holī festival is what people take some masks and this, and what in Western culture they say carnival, yeah, the fasting. So fasting is coming from the holy, and that time all are dressing. Some are becoming like a fox, and one is becoming like a bear, and one becomes like a cow, and some a ghost, and some are dressed like a priest or Jesus, and different, different things, because this is a holy. Devas and asuras are both there and happily going together and harmonizing, so in the whole world, the culture is united somehow. Culture is there where the human is, and where human is, there’s a culture. Culture is moving with the human. I came now from India to New Zealand. Doesn’t matter what I will tell and how it is, but still with me the Indian culture is moving. True? The New Zealand people came about 150 years ago or something. They brought the European culture; before, it was not there. Culture came with them: way of living, way of sitting, way of eating, way of greeting. Everything. And there was a Māori culture. So now these Maori cultures now become European culture, now become Indian culture, now there are some Africans also, you know, they have African culture. That’s called intercultural, multicultural, the beautiful. So, therefore, tolerance and respect, acknowledgement of every culture and every religion, that will lead again to world peace. And now there is a conference from the United Nations in Brazil, and the subject is this sustainable development and ethics, religious, cultural, political, and everything to harmonize and accept in a beautiful way. So culture is there where the humans are, and where humans are, there is culture. And war is there where humans are, and peace is also there where humans are. So, all that is within us is how we will project. So we hope this, what you call that time, they dug, they churned out the poison. Some time ago, we all heard, we all witnessed that somewhere in Mexico, they were drilling for oil, for petrol. And then came a lot of oil, and they didn’t know how to seal it. So, you know how many millions of liters? There was a pattern of the oil, and how many animals died. And the color was the same. So I was thinking, this is in Kali Yuga, the churning of the ocean. True? The ambition of good people and bad people. And now they couldn’t master this. What to do? Destroy it. But they couldn’t reach; they had no approach to Śiva. Similarly, within us is the ocean of our wisdom. And if we shall churn, we shall churn for the good thing. Therefore, Swāmī Śivānandajī of Ṛṣikeś said, within you is the fountain of joy and within you is the ocean of bliss. Kill this little "I" and lead a divine life. So, churning the ocean means that we practice our Kriyā, ascending and descending breath, concentration of all chakras where all jewels are lying there. Carefully take that quality. So Sudhara Kriya will support and purify this ocean from pollution and create that nectar. So today is the second day of Holi, and I pray to the Almighty to bless our whole world for peace, for harmony, for love and understanding, that our actions, our words, and our thoughts become that nectar which should protect everyone. God bless you.
