How to find peace

The path to peace, memory, and fearlessness is found through yogic health. Peace begins within the heart and cannot be gained from outside. A primary cause of disease and nervousness is stress from an imbalanced nervous system. Health requires disciplined nourishment. Practice Alpāhāra, eating little. After a meal, eat nothing for six hours, only water. This gives the digestive system rest. A healthy body sleeps well, a sign of peace. Memory is connected to the Mūlādhāra cakra. Practice Aśvinī Mudrā to strengthen the nervous system and develop memory. Practice Kapālabhāti Prāṇāyāma to activate the brain. Perform Śaṅkhaprakṣālana for internal purification. Health is primarily in your hands through practice. Control the diet, reduce quantity, and peace will follow.

"Śānti is within your heart. Peace begins from our heart."

"Eat as much as you can. But then, for six hours, nothing to eat."

Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ, sarve santu nirāmayāḥ, sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kacid duḥkha bhāg bhavet, oṁ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ, śāntiḥ. Dear sisters and brothers, a very good evening. Nice to see you, and welcome. Today’s subject is very interesting for everyone. Maybe not now, but later on, so it is better to have something in advance. Well, our subject is always yoga. And yoga has many, many branches. While practicing yoga, we gain good health—physical, mental, social, spiritual, etc. Today, the first is called peace, śānti. Every time, in the beginning of meditation, at the end of the meditation, at the beginning of satsaṅg, and at the end of satsaṅg, we chant Oṁ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Many times, the girls have the name Śānti, and they think, "Why is Swāmījī always calling me Śānti, Śānti...? Should I go to him?" We say there is no peace in the world. We call it śānti. But we have many, many śāntis. Millions. But what does that mean? The śānti within ourselves. We would like to have peace, but we cannot. Ale nemôžeme. It is our own mistake. You will not gain śānti from outside. Śānti is within your heart. To understand what śānti is. Peace begins from our heart. Now, there are certain systems in our body which control everything, and that’s called the nervous system. Well, we all know about the nervous system. And if there are some doctors, they will understand more. I’m not a doctor, I’m a yogī. I have the science of yoga. And you may have a science of doctoring. Sometimes we come together, sometimes we can’t come together. But now it’s accepted more and more. A better treatment is through the practice of yoga. In the whole world, in the last three or four decades, in different countries, in universities, they have been doing research. And many diseases and psychic diseases are developing from the brain side. And also they said the stress is a cause of many diseases. And that stress is like a nervousness. And this stress, we also think of nervousness. Without any reason, one is very scared. Without any reason, the fear, the nervousness, uncertainty. Feeling loneliness, feeling loneliness, so these are caused from our nerve systems. So they said that even such diseases like schizophrenia, cancers, and many other diseases—kidneys, livers, heart—of course, there is also the cause of nourishment. There are ten senses in our body, and one is the sense of taste. And all who are sitting in this hall, including or excluding? Myself is not excluding; myself is including. That is our taste injury, the taste in the mouth. So this is sitting here. Different kinds of creatures, how they are taking nourishment, or eating. There are some animals that only eat and eat and eat. Then they sit down for a while, and then again get up and eat and eat and eat. But the humans, their system, digestive system, to keep healthy, the health in our body, then it is said, control your eating. When you eat, eat as much as you can. But then, for six hours, no, nothing to eat. Then, for six hours, whatever you were eating, of course, was sattvic food. Vegetarian food, fruits, nuts, milk, etc. So, eat for half an hour, one hour sitting, or 20 minutes; eat as much as you can. So, this food has three different kinds of nourishment at the time we are eating. Our stomach needs solid food, and at the same time, liquid. And space for the air. That is it. And then don’t eat anything for six hours. Except water. Juice is not a substitute for water. Milk is also not allowed, and also coffee and tea are also not allowed. Soft drinks are also counted as nourishment. After six hours, you can eat. Then again, six hours or eight hours. So breakfast, lunch, and dinner, that’s all. So, eat breakfast, not too much. In European generations, they said, "Eat like a king." Did you ever see a king, how he is eating? They eat very little. That’s called in Sanskrit, it’s called Alpāhāra. Alpāhāra, breakfast? Alp āhāra. Alp means little, āhāra means the nourishment. You know, we have here in Europe, Alpine. Do you know the Alpine Mountains? Yes. Austrians are thinking we have more Alps. And the Swiss people say we have more, but do you know what is Alpine? It’s called the small Himalaya. In Sanskrit, it is a name, Alpin means small Himalaya. I’m not talking about geography. Alpāhāra. Who would like to be very healthy and have a strong strength in the body? Alpāhāra. That one will have a strong nervous system, strong muscles, healthy joints, and healthy organs, and you will enjoy all kinds of eating. So, alpahāra is like a medicine. Therefore, most Ayurvedic medicines, which you are getting, or some different kinds of treatments, are taken in the morning on an empty stomach, or what you call fasting. Like when you go to the doctor for a blood test, you still go in the morning without eating. So, whatever Ayurvedic medicine you take, they ask you to take it in the morning. And it means there is nearly, nearly ten hours, and the stomach is resting. But last, what I want to tell is that we should come to give the rest to our stomach, to digest everything and do at least 10 hours. Āyurveda, it is a small quantity. Yeah, it’s a quality, not a quantity. So there are some herbs which are for our brain. And many people think for our brain, we need a lot of fat, a lot of sweets, a lot of nuts, a lot of honey, and so on. It’s not like that. Early morning, you may eat five to ten almonds, that’s all. In a little warm water, one teaspoon of honey, that’s all. So, a Vaidya will come and he will tell you, "Eat only this and this and this." We follow for one week, then we give up. Āyurveda is not like an antibiotic, immediately acting in the body. Āyurveda is slowly, slowly, maybe after six months. You will feel that now I feel better, but it is slow but sure. All our nervous systems will be strengthened. I’m not an Āyurvedic doctor. I am not a doctor of Āyurveda, but as the doctor advises me and what I read in yoga and Āyurveda, that is what I am telling you. Now, if you tell me, "Swāmījī, can you advise me on some Āyurvedic medicine?" I can’t advise you on anything. So the subject is Śānti. The first thing is to maintain peace within yourself; you should be healthy. If you are healthy, you sleep well. The ability to sleep well is a sign of good health. And who can sleep long and good, have peace? But if you sleep over hours, then Āyurveda says it is a tamas guṇa. Laziness, drowsiness, that again, food is not good. So for yoga, we have to balance with the nourishment. So this is one. Second. Nowadays, it is happening that we are slowly, slowly losing our memory. And to lose the memory sometimes is painful. And so today the subject is peace, memory, and fearlessness. And the subject of today’s conversation is peace, memory, and fearlessness. And the first instruction is that after eating, give six hours not to eat anything. That is the first thing. You can drink water. You are not hungry. It’s only that you have a habit of eating something all the time, like chewing gum. And chewing gum is also very unhealthy. Many people who are using chewing gum develop different kinds of diseases. And what we call the ulcer, ulcer. Because you are giving information to your digestion. The jāṭharāgni, the digestive fire, becomes stronger. And they are working so that something is coming in to digest. But chewing gum has nothing inside, nothing for our digestion. So, give up the habit of chewing gum. Still, if you want to have something like a chewing gum, then have some cardamom in your mouth. That when you take a cardamom, there is no information to the stomach. But you have good aroma in your mouth, and if you speak to someone, When you talk to somebody, how are you? Mouth to mouth, comes good smell. Cardamom is healthy and good for our intense time. Four times a year, do Saṅkhya Prakṣālana. Yoga tells you to keep your intense time. We have the intense time of 8.5 meters long. How long is the big pipe? And whatever we eat, it has to go that long. And something remains, something remains. May it remain like a colour, a one-by-one layer. So, if we make a Śaṅkaprakṣālana Kriyā, it is one of the best purifications inside. So, Haṭha Yoga. Haṭha Yoga is not āsanas. It’s not like these prānāyāms. But in Haṭha Yoga, there is one prāṇāyāma that is included, so you know all. Haṭha Yoga is Netī, Dhautī, Bastī, Naulī, Trāṭak, and Kapālabhātī. Kapālabhāti Prāṇāyāma is the best for the brain. Kapal is this forehead, our sinuses, etc. It supplies more oxygen to our brain. It activates again all the activities of the brain, and what we call, why our memory becomes little and little. It is all the system becomes slowly, slowly reducing the activity. Our brain becomes like a lime on it, inside. Now, to our mūlādhāra and the brain system, memory is connected together. Mulādhāra and our memory are connected. What we call the kundalinī signs. Mūlādhāra, Svādhiṣṭhāna, Maṇipūra, Anāhata, Viśuddhi, Ājñā, Bindu, Sahasrāra. Systematically, step by step, these cakras. But Mūlādhāra controls all. The message goes from the Mūlādhāra. And your memory depends on your Mūlādhāra. Therefore, there is one Kṛiyā in Yoga. There are Āsanas, Prāṇāyāmas, Mudrās, and Bandhas. A Bandhī Kriyā. Kriyā. So, Kriyā, Aśvinī Mudrā. Aśva is the horse. So this is when the horse makes what you call the dumpling. They, exactly, you will count it 35 times, inhaling, contracting, relaxing, contracting, relaxing. So when one goes to the bathroom, one goes to the toilet. After you pass your stool, you feel lightness in the body. You feel your tension reduces because of the movements in the Mūlādhāra Cakra, in the NS muscle. Therefore, when you go to the toilet, your stool should be soft, neither diarrhea nor constipation. If your intestine, your stomach, and your digestion are healthy, you use 10 cm of toilet paper. When your intestine, your digestive system, is not in order, sometimes you need half a meter of toilet paper. Yes, you know, and someone doesn’t need it at all. Because it’s locked, then you have to practice basti. You know what bastī is, what you see? Do you know what Basti is? It is like a śaṅkaprakṣālana. So this kriyā, I am telling you for our memory today, How we can help ourselves, how to become healthy. Of course, if there is an accident and your leg is broken, or your hand is broken, then of course you have to go to Dr. Martin, and he will repair your bones. When your bones break, don’t come to me. I will send you immediately to the Martin. But for other things, Martin will send them to me. So we have agreement between doctor and yogī. So I cannot tell you that with yoga we can do all. Thanks to God, thanks to our modern science. So medicine is not bad, but medicine is a poison. If you take without knowing. So, in the chemistry shop, that is written: it’s poison. Don’t touch any medicine without knowing. So, what I am telling you, this is experiences and what the yogic literature says about how to keep the human body healthy. There are many, many yoga practitioners and yogīs, but one person I know, and that you all know, is a very famous person in the world. And that is called Rāmdevjī. You know Rāmdevjī Yoga? And he is one of the richest yogīs, a billionaire. He said, "I said, Holy Gurujī said, money is not bad." Bad is if you use the money for bad things. So you sell and earn good money honestly, and do good things. There are many, many Āyurvedic medicines. But I don’t know, I didn’t test everything. But Rāmdevjī’s all medicines and everything have original quality. There is no wrong mixture inside. He gets up at 3:30 in the morning, no matter where he is, and he sleeps on the floor. He has a nice bed. Often he took me to his living room and sleeping room. We are good friends. 3:30 doesn’t matter, even if he slept only one hour. 3:30 he gets up and practices his yoga personal exercises, and by 4 o’clock or 4:30 in the morning, he is on the stage to demonstrate yoga and teach all people. That we should learn, okay? Tomorrow, get up at 3 o’clock. This is the first step. But we go to sleep at 3 o’clock in the morning. Alright. So, these eight chakras in the body, each chakra has its own quality. It has a special effect on our body, mind, intellect, concentration, awareness, etc. So, in the human body, according to the yogic anatomy, there are 72,000 nerves. There are 72,000 nerves, and each nerve has a different kind of vibration, and that vibration means some energy, different energy, and this is all controlled by four nerves. And all of these are controlled by four nerves. Iḍā, Piṅgalā, Suṣumnā and Vajranāḍī. It is Iḍā, Piṅgalā, Suṣumnā, and Vajranāḍī. These three come through the spinal column down. And Vajranāḍī begins from our big toe and second toe. And that’s why, in order to digest food well and avoid constipation, after eating, sit for a minimum of ten minutes in Vajrāsana. If you cannot do it every day, at least five days a week you should do it in Vajrāsana. That will keep our memory balanced and perfect. There is a medicine in Āyurveda. Perfect. You take this medicine for six months. Then six months rest. You can repeat again. So that your memory will be very good. Then there will be no anxiety, no nervousness, and you will be healthy. When we are healthy, then we have peace. Now, there are two things. And now there are two things, the personal and impersonal problems, that we cannot avoid. The impersonal problem we cannot avoid. Personal problems we can solve through our yoga practice, thinking, and mastering the nervous system. Impersonal, now there is some fighting, some war. We can’t help. We can pray. So we know we are unhappy. We have no peace. Because the neighbors are fighting, someone is very ill. Someone, a dear person, died. Then we are restless. So, but still we have to understand, and we can do only according to the yoga prayer. So when we chant Om Śānti, Śānti,... We are sending the vibration from our brain. Definitely, this word, "śānti," will help. When a few people are fighting, then one comes. Please, keep śānti. Moment, what’s the problem? Everybody is silent. Shanti. In the school, in the classroom, students are talking in noise. The teacher stands up, "Shanti," silent. So, when we use one mantra, such a silentness comes. So, in India they use one word, "pin silent," and People are thinking, how can the mind be silent? You know what is pin silent? This is an English word Indians have created. Indians have made so many English words, even the British English they don’t know. Yes. Pin silent. So, you know the paper pin? When you fall down, That’s called pensive, and that’s the peace, peace, peace. So through the practice of Aśvinī Mudrā, our nervous system will become strong, our memory will develop, anxiety will disappear here, and peace will come within thyself. Only this one kriyā—so there are many other kriyās—and so for best health, control your Diet, if you eat less, you will not die. If you eat less, you will not become weaker, but if you eat more, You will be unhealthy. You will not be healthy. And you will have less energy and less strength, so reduce the diet. One month’s food, how much do you consume? Now, this one month’s food which you are consuming, consume it in one and a half months. Follow one year. You will see that’s called a kāya kalpa. Many, many diseases will disappear, like joint pain. Back pain, stomach problems, heart problems, energy problems. So this is how yoga can help us with peace, memory, and nervousness. These three, I told you today, and in the next seminar, we will have these exercises. But until then, for six hours, do not eat anything. Except if you have diabetes and the doctor tells you to eat every three hours. Hours, two biscuits. We have to respect the doctor, but slowly, slowly, this you will give up also. So yoga is not only for your muscles to grow, but to make our body healthy and our memory strong. Śaṅkhaprakṣālana, Kapālabhāti, and the Aśvinī Mudrā. And four times a year, Saṅkhaprakṣālana. There are four seasons. So, at the end and beginning of the season, that is a junction, that time we should have a Saṅkṛ Praśamana. Better to do with the group. At home, you will not do it completely. You will compromise something, two glasses less water. So in your yoga center, with your yoga teacher, you should do the Saṅkhya Prakṣālana every day. So, practicing abhyāsa, abhyāsa, kuṇṭi, abhyāsa. Oh, son of the Kunti, Arjuna, practice, practice, practice. Practice makes perfect, and so our health, 80%, is in our hands. 20% is in the doctor’s hands, and there is no more percent. And if there, then in God’s hands. So, śānti. Create in your heart. Practice Aśvinī Mudrā. Morning Kapālabhāti and diet. So, breakfast, don’t eat like a king. Who is above the king? Is a yogī. So eat morning as a yogī. And what is that yogī doing? Oh God. Herbal tea, no taste. It’s only yellow warm water. Taste is only for the tongue. But particular herbal water functions in the body. Lunch is good, and dinner? Medium. That’s all? And then we are happy. And how are we happy?
