Shiva and Parvati

The Guru is the sole means to transcend heaven's limits and attain endless liberation. Heaven is a temporary realm for those with pure karma, but it ends, forcing return to the mortal world. True freedom is moksha, which is boundless. The Guru embodies the supreme reality; meditation, worship, and obedience to the Guru's word are the foundations of spiritual practice. Even gods sought human rebirth to find a true Master for liberation. The story illustrates this: Shiva agreed to impart the secret of immortality to Parvati through the Guru Gita in a secluded cave. A parrot overheard the teaching, gaining knowledge but requiring a human birth to complete its practice. This shows the Guru's grace is the essential path.

"Therefore, a Guru... they are supreme, the Parabrahma."

"Therefore, one bhajan said: 'Me hi jānu, aur ko kaib khānu, bachchan pyālā gesha...'"

Hari Om, everybody. It was a nice day. You were crossing the ocean, the Pacific Ocean. What a beautiful thing. We had a special vehicle, flying, and we were in an ancient, ancient forest. No one was there. Of course, there are many different creatures. The beauty: jal, chal, thal, char, nab char, jal char in the ocean. Bhagavān Śiva, when the Devas of the Svargaloka and the Rākṣasas were fighting—one wants this, one wants that—Bhagavān Śiva occupied them. Because Śiva balances both, positive and negative. Without the negative, the positive will not show its glory. And without the positive, the negative cannot show its negative energy, etc. So, Devas and Asuras. Devas, who have the pure qualities, higher qualities—Devas we also call gods. But who are the Devas? You have done good karma, dharmātmā, following of the dharma, all positive thoughts, all antakarma, antakarma, purified. Antaḥkaraṇa, when it becomes pure, at that time one has the right to go to Svargaloka. But in Svargaloka, you will see heaven. The quality of the Svargaloka, it is there we call Devas. Who comes there is Deva, equal to the life of God. But the Devas said, and they know, "O Bhagavān, O Śiva, when we have enjoyed our Svargaloka's joy, happiness—until that time they will remain as young as they are, enjoying all good qualities—then what?" The Devas said, "O Prabhu, yā karenge ke bār meṁ? Kīrtanya karenge?" So, O Bhagavān, O Śiva, or Viṣṇu also, or Brahmā, when we have finished our good karmas, where will we go? We will go again on this Mṛti Loka, this mortal world. My Lord, that time again give us the human life, and that we have the devotion, bhakti, towards the Gurudev. Because Gurur Brahma, Gurur Viṣṇu, Gurur Devo Maheśvaraha—these all three are the embodiment of the Gurudev. Gurur Sākṣāt Parabrahma. Therefore, a Guru like Mahāprabhujī, Holy Gurujī, Devpurījī, that Sākṣāt Parabrahma, they are supreme, the Parabrahma. Tasmai Śrī Gurave Namaḥ. That, O God, give me that luck that I get such a master, such a Gurudev. Not one has said that "I am the Guru." No. A Guru will always say, "I am not Guru, I am a disciple." Therefore, it is Dhyāna Mūlam Gurumūrti. Meditate on the embodiment of the Gurudev. The form of the Gurudev, the picture of the Gurudev, the name of the Gurudev. Dhyāna mūlaṁ guru mūrti, pūjā mūlaṁ guru pādam. And worship the lotus feet of the Gurudev. Dhyāna mūlaṁ guru mūrti, pūjā mūlaṁ guru pādaṁ, mantra mūlaṁ guru vākya. The best mantra you can have is to follow the words of the Master. Guru Vakya. Your mokṣa, your property, your prosperity, your good health, your mokṣa, everything is the word of the Gurudev. Therefore, one bhajan said: Me hi jānu, aur ko kaib khānu, bachchan pyālā gesha, me hi jānu, bachchan bālā gesha, me hi jānu. Jaggī jānu aur kai bakhānu, Main jānu aur kai bakhānu. Chānā pyārāo lage sā, Main Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān kī, Dev Purīṣya Mahādev kī. Therefore, O God, O Supreme, after we finish our karma from heaven, we definitely have to come back to the mortal world. But please give me human life so that I can do my very best to come to mokṣa, not only to heaven. Heaven is a quarter, heaven is limited, because the hell, the hell is a little bigger, but even it is bigger, it is limited. Heaven is also limited, but mokṣa is endless. Brahma Loka, Brahma Janati, Brahmā. Those who have studied the scriptures, Vedas, Brahmins, they know what is Brahman. Only some mantras: Oṁ Svāhā, Namo Nārāyaṇa, Svāhā, Bhakti, Bhakti,... Svāhā, Bhūrbhūva, Svāhā, Tatsaviturvareṇyam, Svāhā, Bhargo Devasya, Svāhā. Only this mantra is not enough. The Brahmin is that one who does tapasyā, sādhanā, and comes to know the Brahman. That is a Brahman to the Brahmā. Anyhow, so Bhagavān Śiva, you know, tomorrow is a day of Śiva’s night. And what does that mean, Shiva’s night, that we will speak about? But for Śiva, Svayambhū, the whole world, our earth, it’s just, for Śiva, it’s just like one stop here. You see on what? The rest is earth, different. Anyhow, the Śakti, she died. After a long, long time, Pārvatī Jī came. So Śiva, who was residing mostly in the Himalayas near the Kailāśa Mountain, between Kadri and Kedārnāth, Badrināth, all these places... Nārada Ṛṣi, Nārada is also called an incarnation; Nārada is the son of Brahmā. And Brahmājī gave the blessing to Nārada, "You have the freedom to go to all the lokas: Naraka, Svarga, Brahmaloka—the 21,100 planetary systems. You can go everywhere; no one can stop you. But you cannot enjoy one thing for more than three minutes or five minutes." Yes, so Nārada comes here, we will sing Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Nārāyaṇa. Like there is only one minute, that’s it. Nāradjī was going somewhere, and Nārad, look, Divine Mother Pārvatījī is sitting there near the mountain Kailāśa. Nārada said, "Today Bhagavān Śiva is not here. I shall go and make praṇām to Pārvatījī." So Nārāyaṇa came, Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa,... Navaśivāya, Śaivāya. Pārvatī said, "Oh my son Nārada, what brought you here?" "Mother, nothing. I was just going from one loka to another loka, and I saw you are here, Divine Mother. So I just want to come and make praṇām, then I will go." She said, "Yes, Nārada, but you didn’t come always. You have some reason." He said, "Mother, all the times I reason when I visit the green mother." "Pārvatī? Pārvatī Jī? Divine Mother?" He said, "Yes, Nārada. Come on, tell what? Why? Okay, I will not tell you." She said, "No, no,... tell." "Yes, Pārvatī, do you know why Śiva has the big mālā of the skulls of the humans?" She said, "This, I don’t know. How do you know? He has many times this mālā snake, and you don’t ask him." "Then you tell me what?" "No, no,... mother. I don’t know. Only Śiva can tell. Otherwise, my days are not good today." So, within two to three minutes, he said, "Mother, let me go. You bless me, I go down, and Śivājī will tell you. But you must ask him. Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa." After 10 minutes, Śiva came, Bhagavān Śiva. Alak Niranjan, Alak Niranjan. Alak Pārvatī, sitting there, she stands up, "My Lord, how are you?" She said, "Good, oh, it was a very nice walk. Sometimes Fiji, sometimes Bangkok, Hong Kong, everywhere. I came again to the Himalaya." But Pārvatī, you have some doubt, something. On your face, there is something. She said, "No, Lord, nothing." "Okay, that’s very good then. On dandrup, no problem. Maybe it is my mistake." She said, "You can never make a mistake, my Lord." I said, "Okay. Pārvatī, your words are different today. I think Nārada was here." She said, "Yes, Nārada was here." And at the end, Śiva asked me, "Why do you have so many mālās? One big mālā with so many heads." I asked him why, but he doesn’t know. He better ask Śivjī, Devī, Goddess. I will tell you sometime, forget it. She said, "No, no, I want to know." She said, "Tomorrow, day after tomorrow, one month." Always, she said, please tell me. She said, "Well, it is not in your subject, but I want to know because you are always having these skulls in the neck." He said, "Pārvatī, as many skulls are in my neck, that many times you incarnated and died, so great is my love for you, my very dear one. So always, your head... I have here a mālā." "Śivjī, so many times I died. And you are as you see." He said, "Yes, I am eternal, immortal." She said, "That’s not right. It’s not justice. Why? Why are you immortal and I am mortal? Why don’t you make me immortal? You don’t need such a heavy mālā anymore. And that I don’t have to die." He said, "This is not easy, to be immortal. When you cannot give me more tea, then who can be? My Lord, Śiva, you are the entire universe and the Lord of the universe. Tell me." She said, "It’s not so easy to tell you. There are some stories and mantras." "Then tell me. We are here alone, nobody, we can..." He said, "No, no, no. There are many creatures who listen. And that knowledge, that vidyā, that’s called a vidyā, amṛta vidyā. If we become like the sweetness that comes from eating sweets, then we should also become like the bitterness that comes from indulging the mind in worldly desires." She said, "Then where, when will you take me? I will look." So always, Śiva was going. We are near the Kashmir glaciers, he saw there. More glaciers and snow; everything is covered with snow and beautiful caves like this big one. Shiva went along there. There is nobody, near nobody. So Śiva came to Pārvatī and said, "Let us go, I will give you the knowledge of immortality." So that cave is called Amarnāth. What? Amarnāth. Amar means immortal, Nath is Śiva. The gods, so Pārvatī and Śiva went there. Shiva said, "Pārvatī, look, if there is nobody." He said, "Lord, no one. I will make you immortal. I will chant for you the Gūru Gītā. And if you will hear this Guru Gītā, through that you will achieve immortality. But you know, daytime can be some other creature’s night. It is night." So Pārvatī is sitting there, Śivajī is sitting in meditation, and Śiva said, "Pārvatī, I will recite the Guru Gītā. I will sing, I will tell you the knowledge of the Guru Gītā. But I will go to the other loka, another consciousness, because the entire universe, immortality in each and every word of Guru Gītā must go to your mastiṣk." She said, "Yes, my lord." So he said, "Do not sleep the whole night." She said, "I will not sleep." He said, "I know that you sleep easily. So, I will say the mantra, and you will say, 'Yes, yes... haan, haan.' I reach my word, and you have to say, 'Haan.'" After two or three hours, Pārvatī jī will become tired. What is happening at that time? In that cave was a beautiful parrot, a parrot, sua, tota. Sua kya tey koi tota kya tey? Yes, you know the sua. Tota said, "Oh my God, such an opportunity in my life. And if Pārvatī will sleep, God Śiva will wake up from the samādhi, and the whole game is finished." So that parrot came a little closer, and Śiva said mantras, and Totā said, "Huh? Huh?" And Śiva was residing, residing. And Pārvatī put her head to Śiva’s shoulder. And Shiva thought she is saying, "Ha ha," but she was sleeping. Morning, Brahmaloka, Brahmamūrta. Before the sun rises, at the latest, that is the time you should wake up. If the sun is rising and you are still sleeping, then your knowledge is gone. Your good karma is dissolving. Therefore, at least at sunrise, make praṇām, and after half an hour you can go to sleep, no problem. But you should be at that time when Śivjī opens his eyes. Huh? Yeah. And Śivjī said, "Who is here?" I said, "I am." "I am? Oh God! Pārvatī." Oh my Lord, eyes left. He said, "That’s wrong. Tea. But who bought that? I don’t want that my Vidyā, immortality will come from me, still from me." And Papaya, he went away. Shiva took his Triśūla and ran behind that parrot. In the glaciers, down, up, this mountain, that mountain, Śiva, he came. Four, five, six hours, he comes near the Badrināth. And there was the cave of Ved Vyāsa. Bhagavān Ved Vyāsa, who dictated, wrote the Vedas. And 18,000 ślokas of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam were written by Vedavyāsa. And many, many, many others. Even the Bhagavad Gītā is Vedavyāsa’s writing. Vedavyāsa. Therefore, this sitting, who is giving the lecture, who reads the holy book, who gives the holy lectures, it doesn’t matter who is who, who is sitting there, it is the seat of the Vyāsa. It is known as Vedavyāsa, Vyāsagaṇḍī, the holy seat of Vyāsa. Your Guru’s place you are taking, that is Vyāsa’s. Therefore, Guru Pūrṇimā is worshipped in the name of Bhagavān Vedavyāsa. Ved Vyāsa went for a walk, walking, Ṛṣi, and Ved Vyāsa’s wife, she is waiting and she is waiting, that he still didn’t come, where he will come. So, afternoon it was, I think, three o’clock, and Śiva is running and the parrot is running here, there, here, there. Ved Vyāsa’s wife was standing, and she was tired. She said, and the parrot said, "Nowhere in the world is a safer place than a mother’s mind." Vedavyāsa’s wife was doing like this, and the parrot went into his stomach and closed the mouth. Shiva comes, and this side comes Ved Vyāsa. Shiva threw his triśūla at Vedavyāsa’s wife. Vedavyāsa said, "Lord of the Universe, Swayambhū Śiva, this is an innocent woman, and you throw your triśūla? That is not for you." He put it down. Śaṅkara Bhagavān made praṇām to the wife of Vedavyāsa and to Vedavyāsa, and Śiva went back to Amṛt Nāth. And Amrit Nath, then Pārvatī went with him and Pārvatī said, "I’m so sorry." He said, "Don’t ask me anymore about this." Now, what happens? That parrot, that parrot, Śuka, they call in language Śuka, now he went into the womb of Vedavyāsa’s wife. Now he doesn’t want to come out. Nine months, ten months, twelve months, she is suffering. But he said, "I don’t want to come out anymore in this mṛti-loka, in the mortal world, because I am immortal. But a little bit is missing, so I have to do the tapasyā, and that my tapasyā is so strong, but in saṁsāra there is adharma, and I don’t want to go to the adharma."
