Yoga is the science of being Human

A spiritual discourse on Kriya Yoga, discipline, and avoiding pitfalls on the path.

"In every system, in every approach, and in every life, we need that discipline. That is why Patañjali always... states that yoga begins with discipline and continues by following discipline."

"Therefore, the Muslims are very good. They do not dream like that. They are very clear. They say 'Allah,' and that is all."

Swami Avadhutji addresses practitioners during an anushthana, emphasizing the strict, disciplined path of Kriya Yoga as the sure method. He warns against neglecting practice, against those who teach without mastery or realization, and specifically against the spiritual pitfall of visionary "dreaming" about deities and angels. He defines true religion as realizing the relation between the individual soul and the Supreme, criticizes both religious and scientific fanaticism, and advises students to study the chakras properly from authentic sources.

Now, perhaps, we shall again become aware of the chakras and Kuṇḍalinī Yoga. Kuṇḍalinī and the chakras constitute a very extensive chapter. For yogīs, the safe way, the perfect way, and the sure path is this Kriyā that we are practicing. In every system, in every approach, and in every life, we need that discipline. That is why Patañjali always—I am repeating the first sūtras or ślokas—states that yoga begins with discipline and continues by following discipline. In the beginning, people are very concentrated, disciplined, and devoted, and they practice Kriyā. But then, slowly, they begin to neglect certain things. This morning, those who were practicing kriyās during the anuṣṭhāna felt some slight discomfort, and I understand they were not entirely comfortable. But why were they discomforted? When you practice your kriyās daily, you know the postures, the techniques, and the principles. So how does this slight discomfort arise? The issue is not with Kriyā itself. The Kriyā you practice lasts about 25 minutes, but Umāpurī asks you to dedicate 25 hours. That is demanding. The first day is good, the second day is a little uncomfortable, the third day feels a bit heavy. But by the fourth day, it becomes very good. When we get up to go for a walk, initially it is not so pleasant. Then comes a slight ache. That, too, is not comfortable. But on the third level, you begin to enjoy the walking. This anuṣṭhāna we are doing is a kriyā anuṣṭhāna. We have perfect techniques and a perfect place here—very peaceful, with good air and everything. You have good accommodations, cold and warm water, and good food. It is difficult to cook every day with more and more taste. Good quality can be achieved with less, but that large quantity is difficult. Similarly, as we practice together, sometimes there is a little discomfort. Those who do Kriya Yoga practice it every day. Those who did not follow the principle are lost. Some begin to teach others even though they are not a master, not a guru, and have no initiation. They can lead someone in a different direction, confuse them completely, and then you think this Kriya is not perfect. But those who remain steadfast and practice will see the fruits. For that, we need a perfect environment: good season, good soil, good temperature, and so on. Many begin to teach kriyās and meditations without realization. That is why some people become confused, or they do not want to do it, or they go away. Then they begin to dream. There are many who can tell you good stories. They will say, "Yes, now you will see the divine. God is coming. Hanumanjī is flying over us. Blessings. Oh, Kṛṣṇa is coming." And he meditates, and Kṛṣṇa is playing the flute. And all the gopīs of Kṛṣṇa—what you call the angels—with nice white cloth, moving about. And they say, "Oh, an angel is protecting you." That means you have now become a dreamer. You are lost; you are losing all your sādhanā. You will become confused, psychic, and disturbed. Then what happens? We do not accept that we made a mistake. Very few of you will say, "Swamiji, it is my mistake. I made a mistake." Instead, they place the blame on Swamiji, or their children, or their husband, saying, "Because of the message, because of Swamiji, because of yoga, I have to go to seminars, and my children were without a mother." But if your mother goes every day to the theater or the opera, they do not blame your children. Every parent works; they are not sitting at home. So what about your children then? This is an excuse to project your mistakes onto somebody else so that they can keep dreaming. Now I understand. Many times, there will come a moment when an angel appears. Then Kṛṣṇa comes. Then they say, "What is this? What is in Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa? Nārada is coming, 'Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa.' Then Kṛṣṇa is coming, and, 'Oh, God, an angel is coming, Jesus is coming.'" They will not come; they are not coming. Please do not dream. The angels have no time for you to be dreaming. If an angel comes, let it come today, here, or tomorrow. So, do not become crazy. That is why, on our path, I never tell you that Mahāprabhujī will come in your dream, or that Holī Gurujī will come, or Devapurījī will come. I never say this. I say their blessings are with us. Someone says, "What Swamījī teaches is too little; he is not strict enough." Someone else says he is too strict. So it means, "I will go away." You come to me in India as angels? So there are no angels. There is no such thing. It does not matter which religion you follow. Therefore, the Muslims are very good. They do not dream like that. They are very clear. They say "Allah," and that is all. Allah is only; there is no form, nothing. Just prayer. So, when people come to the spiritual path, unfortunately, some infections come. Infection means crazy people running after angels, and this and that, and Kṛṣṇa. Do you think Kṛṣṇa will run after you? Do you think the gopīs will come and dance? Or do you think there are angels flying like butterflies? Yes, butterflies may come, that is right. Or in the night comes the... what do you call it... the bed bug? Or what is it? They are okay because they are beautiful and silent. They fly without sound, like Dracula. So do not dream like that. Kriyā, Kriya Yoga, and the chakras constitute the science of the human body. That is why yoga is the science of humans: the body, the energy, the mind, the intellect, the consciousness, the ātmā, the soul, then Ātmā and Paramātmā. What I have told you is a very straight, direct, and good path for humans. So, these five bodies: Annamaya Kośa. Annamaya Kośa is very extensive. It is not only this body, but it contains a great deal of material within. The material in a human body is unbelievable. You cannot buy it like that. How is this within us? This Annamaya Kośa, this physical body, is the divine temple. Our body is the temple of our soul. A temple, church, or mosque—whatever you call it—is kept very clean and peaceful. Now there are people with ego who say, "No, we do not want anything religious." These so-called individuals who have studied for many, many years, read many books and studied science—if there is sense in science, then they will understand what religion is. If you understand science, you understand religion. If you do not accept religion, then you still do not know what science is. Scientists can also be fanatic. Do you not think they are fanatic? They are very fanatic. So there are people who are fanatic: "My religion is the best, and your religion is not good." That is fanaticism. Religion means the relation; realizing the relation of ātmā to Paramātmā. So, to realize God or the ātmā is religion. Every religion has very beautiful teachings in its holy books—very good teachings about not killing, loving everybody, and so on. But there is ignorance, and ignorance thinks, "I am the best." That is the ego. These so-called academically educated people are slowly becoming non-believers, atheists. That is why religion is diminishing. Or there must be someone strong who, even to the scientists, insists that they must follow this path; otherwise, they should go. Do not go against God. Even if you do not know God, on the day God comes, you will not realize it is God. And when you do realize, you will fall down a thousand times and say, "Forgive me, God, forgive me." Why is the whole earth in trouble and suffering? Because one principle—religion, spirituality—has already fallen into trouble. Your neighbors have their preferred color; they like a very good color. Another likes other colors. Why not? Your neighbor is a neighbor. One likes red, another likes brown. Some like white, some like yellow. Okay, why not? In your garden, how many flowers bloom when the rain comes? Even wild flowers, and God gives them color. Search in your garden: how many colors and flowers will you find, even tiny ones? They are still flowers. Similarly, your neighbors and my neighbors—we are all neighbors. We should be happy; then there will be world peace. So, Kriyā Yoga and all the chakras guide our life and our consciousness toward the highest consciousness. You should read Hidden Powers in the Human. On the last pages, you should read those principles. Then you will return to the Mūlādhāra cakra or Anāhata cakra. In the Anāhata cakra, which petals, which bīja mantra, what it means—but you do not read, you do not know it by heart. That is why we cannot be successful. There is so much confusion around people, and they want to fly today already. Do not worry; one day you will fly. You will fly, and we will say, "You are flying, oh my dear, you were so nice." Your heart might fly. Please tell me which was the best way that I, too, may come to God, to fly simply. Please study each chakra again simply. I have taught extensively. There are many books on Kuṇḍalinī and Tantra, and so on. Stupid. Now Tantra is famous throughout the world as pornography. They present pornography as chakra and Kuṇḍalinī. How to describe them? Tantra. It is not that. It is not that. But some crazy ones do it; what can we do? Nowadays, such a book is good salt. Okay, let them go. But as you know, I teach you the truly divine, positive, sāttvic path so you may go ahead. So, we will perhaps take some chakras, one chakra to the next, tomorrow, the day after, and so on. But yesterday I wanted to translate the bhajan of Mahāprabhujī, and also the bhajan I have written about Mahāprabhujī—a very nice bhajan about the deep nirañjana śabda, the bhajan "Isī Mantra Se Hove Man Bhajan." So, this bhajan of Mahāprabhujī, the holy Gurujī, is about how my beautiful body is a bungalow—a divine bungalow. Perhaps tomorrow before noon we will translate it, no? What do you think? Oh, yes? No? So you must have a good bath, okay? Wash yourself. Then come, so you will also feel how my coach is. When everyone says, "My coach is good, my horse is good," then everybody is cleaning, washing, decorating, and everything, yes? So tomorrow, at 10:30 or so, we will have Maa Holi Gurujī's bhajan. It is a beautiful bhajan. The only problem is the language, but I will try to translate. Tomorrow, someone is receiving Kriyā. If they want to practice Kriyā, they should not stop practicing. They should not drink alcohol or eat meat and such things. And once a day, they have to practice this Kriyā. You should not teach it to others, because there have been people who began to teach Kriyā without my permission. They become mad and make others mad. It is what you call rabbit disease. You know rabbit disease? It is called Pagal Kutta—the mad dog disease. So when they bite you, then you also become rabid. So when you are like this, biting, it means you are giving negative feedback. Those who want to receive Kriyā, please do it and do not give up; otherwise, do not do it. It must not be. Some are receiving mantra, so tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock, mantra for those who want Kriyā. For those who do not want to do Kriyā, no problem. First, read this book, Hidden Powers in Humans, completely. This is your Bible. Before going to sleep, read one page. Śrī Avadhūt Rām Candra Bhagavān kī Jaya, Devadhī Dev Devpurījī Bhagavān kī, Haradhī Bhagavān Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī kī, Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān kī, Alakpurījī Mahādev kī. Oṁ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ.
