Advice for practicing Yoga

The foundation of spiritual practice is the purification of the body and its energy. Knowledge of the chakras must proceed systematically, as wrong knowledge will not lead to the goal. The physical body is composed of five elements: space, fire, air, water, and earth. These elements exist both inside and outside the body and must be purified. The primary methods of purification concern breath and nourishment. Impure food prevents success in yoga. Yogic exercises support the entire bodily system, unlike strenuous physical sports which can harm it. Breath control is vital, as life is measured in a counted number of breaths. Eating less and eating pure, sattvic vegetarian food lengthens life and refines one's energy. Control over speech is equally essential, as spoken words cannot be taken back. The body is a temporary combination of elements; only the soul is eternal. Purification of energy channels and chakras is fundamental, and one must cleanse energy absorbed from others. This holistic purification is the essence of yoga.

"Speak such words that everyone is happy."

"If you want to live long, eat less. If you want to die quickly, eat too much."

And now, the Anāhata Chakra. Many of you have had no lectures on all the chakras. We cannot jump from the ground floor to the fifth floor; we must go step by step. Therefore, we must have knowledge about each and every chakra and how they function in our body. Perhaps yesterday we had an evening lecture about that, and now it is more systematic. Those chakras which were described the day before yesterday range from the earth chakra, the vegetation chakra, animal chakras, human chakras, and above are the devī, divine chakras, and the chakras of liberation, Brahmaloka. We must have knowledge about that. We cannot jump here and there; it is very, very important. If you get wrong knowledge, it will not lead you to that goal. So, it was a glimpse of the chakras and the human body. Our body has five elements, and we know that: the space, the fire, the air, the water, and the earth. These five elements are combined together, and they make our body. This is true not only for us and animals, but for vegetation too. Every element has a very important meaning for us. When these elements come together, then the creation begins—the creation of the body. Now we have to purify these elements, or tattvas. The purification has different techniques: how to purify the space, how to purify the fire, the air, the earth, etc. Each element is within our body. So we are inside and outside. The space, what we call the sky, is also within ourselves. The birds' elements—these birds which have wings and can fly—they have more of the space element. We also have it, but not that much. Our bones are solid, but in certain bones we also have holes inside. Birds look big, but their bones are very, very fragile, and that is why they can fly. Anyhow, this space in our body—our mouth is empty. If it is full, you cannot swallow anything; you cannot take it in the mouth, or our jaw will not move up and down to bite. So we know in the whole body we have the space. It is called Ākāśa. We have fire in our body. If our body is not warm, we will die. If there is too much heat, we are ill. If the temperature is too low, we will die. So this has to be balanced. Similarly, there is air, the air which is purifying our lungs, our entire system, our whole body. This is the air, and it has to be pure air. Constantly, in our body, many thousands of tissues are dying. It is the air which is purifying, cleaning. When you inhale, it is very nice, fresh air. And immediately when you exhale through the mouth, for example, or the nose, it is not a good smell. Some people have such impurities in the system of the body, or they have no good digestion. Mahāprabhujī says, "Mahāprabhujī Karatā, Mahāprabhujī Karatā..." There are different kinds of techniques of the breath, and we have to purify our nourishment—what we should not eat, and what we should eat. Now, one of the disciples—we were a group of about 50 or 90 people—and they are all vegetarians. We came to India, and in Indian food there are spices, different kinds of spices. For different kinds of food, there are different spices. Here in these Western countries, you do not know what the spices are. Maybe some green leaves, a little bit. You have no taste of the spices. And spices are very, very important for the different functions of the body, for the different limbs of the body, for the eyes, for the ears, for the nose, for the intestines, for the liver, for the kidneys, for the blood, tissues, etc. So the spices, spices are the life of the body. So, what is happening? That person's experiences are really the differences. When he came to India and was eating, after one week he said, "It is so good, aroma, good spices, smells from my mouth. I feel so pleasant and light. My breath is so good." After the group came back to Europe, after about a few days, one week, the same person said, "See, from this food that I eat in the western countries, again the not pleasant smell comes out because of the food." And therefore, the food is called sāttvic, the pure. The subtle, sāttvik, rājasik, and tāmasik—these are the three guṇas. So if we cannot purify our nourishment, we will not have success in yoga. Yoga is not only what you are doing, the movement; this is not all. This life, this body—no matter how much we do the exercises, this and that, it has its limitation; the body will give up. So, the physical exercises, the sports, are completely different than yogic exercises, yogic movements. That yoga and postures, āsanas, support the whole system of the body. If you do very heavy exercises, or what you call gymnastics, bodybuilding, etc., you will have only a certain limitation. And with that, you have, or we have, harmed many, many very fine systems of the body. But of course, certain exercises are good. You can run, you can bike, you can swim. It is okay. But do not go over. So the yoga is like when a little baby is born, then how the father and mother take care of the child, how to take it in the hand, how to bring it to the bed, etc. So, similarly, the movements and then the system of the breath... It is said that in the yogic scriptures, we have counted breaths God has given us. When we have that much breath already, then we have no more breath, and when the breath is not there, we die. So it is said that each and every breath is counted. And that is why what we are doing—prāṇāyāms and exercises of the breath... When do we do the prāṇāyāms? For example, vāstrika, kapālabhāti—we are breathing quickly. But that is not counted as a breath. That is only to exercise our lungs. After that, after the Kapālabhāti or Vastrika Prāṇāyāma, you breathe, and you breathe so slow and comfortable. And that is our breath counting. Generally, we are breathing 15 times in one minute. But if we can do eight breaths per minute, you have saved eight breaths. And so the yogic techniques, yogis, they are keeping their breath in such a way so they will have long, long, long life. But if the food is not good—the meat, the egg, the alcohol, drugs, etc.—that is keeping your breath little and little. We do not concentrate and think of our food, how we are eating and how much we are eating. We are eating too much. So it is said: do we live for eating, or are we eating for living? So if you want to live long, eat less. If you want to die quickly, eat too much. So what we are eating, we have to reduce by about 60%. Because we do not have control over our taste and eating. So we cannot stop. We are eating and eating, and then we say, "Oh, I have too many kilos, and I have to waste kilos." Āyurveda says, if a real Āyurvedic doctor comes and looks at you, he or she will say, "Give up all that you are eating, and I will give you a diet." Look after five months, who you will be, how you will be. You are shining light. You have a positive and pure sāttvic light coming out of your body. From your mouth comes such a beautiful aroma back again. So prāṇāyāma is very important. That all the time, the breath is giving good oxygen and putting out the carbon dioxide. But control—only we should have control over our tongue. There are two things from the tongue: one is the taste, and this taste is only until the vocal cord. You may eat ice cream, you may eat chocolate, anything you are eating. After the throat, down, you do not know what the taste is. So this is the taste of our tongue. So control our tongue, of the taste. Drink, eat, drink, etc. Second, our tongue is a bullet. So, think first, very good, and then speak. It is said that these two things, three things, do not come back. The bullet went; it will not come back. And then the word, what you are speaking—you should weigh how heavy your words are, what you are talking, and talk peacefully. Do not talk too lightly or too quickly. There are some people who talk like a machine. You want to tell something, and the person is already talking eight words. And you say, "Yes," but you say, only you will say, but I say it like this: we will speak words about fifteen. That person has no control over the tongue. It is said: "Bani aisi boli manka apak hoi." Speak such words that everyone is happy. "Bani aisi boli manka apak hoi Auranku sital kare apu sital hoi." You make everyone very relaxed and peaceful, and you also make yourself relaxed and peaceful. So that means that we do not have control over our tongue. And the third one, the soul: when the soul is gone, we will not come back. You cannot run behind and say, "Please, please, come again." No. When you die, you die. Elements are only for a certain time. The body does not die because it is the five elements. Space will merge into space. Fire in fire. Air will go in the air. And earth will merge into the earth, so there is no death. Only these five elements dissolve; they separate. So, we keep our soul to achieve those qualities and life, as we said, to become one with God, with the light. And so that is yoga. That is yoga. So, food. Food. Many times, when somebody is talking to you, they smell good. And other different things, sometimes garlic. Those who eat garlic and onions are very calm, and those who do not eat garlic and onions are very thumsy, talking, they are very angry. Many in India, many paṇḍits and these people, they do not eat garlic and onions. But if you tell something, this is wrong. Oh God! They explode, not like a bullet, yes, but what do you call it? A bomb. Yes. So, there is, it is, I made an experiment. I made an experiment. But those who eat garlic and onions, they are kham. But, of course, with this, there are certain spices to eat after that. And it is neutralizing the smell of the garlic on it. Garlic and onion have a very good aroma. But when it goes into our body, and different kinds of gases in the stomach bring out the garlic, we can take some spices. So you will see, when you go to the Indian restaurant, after eating at the Indian restaurant, if... It is vegetarian, and sometimes also non-vegetarian. When they finished, when you go, you will see one plate. And this plate, from that you should take it like this, like a half teaspoon or one teaspoon. And you take it in your mouth and slowly chew it. It brings such an aroma, a very pleasant smell. And it is digesting and purifying all the rājasik or tāmasik guṇas. You can have it at home also, for you. And what is that? It is called, it is called, what is it? Tell me loudly. It is called chupari, not chupari. Chupari is also there, but it is called... how can I forget this? Fennel, yes, fennel, so you said fennel, okay. So you should buy, you should buy. There are two, three kinds of this. One looks more green and very thin, not too thick. This fennel, you eat it, you will have it all. You can, three times a day, put it in your mouth and chew, and chew,... It makes a sattvic feeling in the whole body. So, your yoga practice, your spiritual development, and the awakening of the divine energy in you—we have to bring vegetarian food, no eggs. For your practice of yoga, you must eat vegetarian food, no killed animals, and of course, no alcohol, so sāttvic. You will feel so happy, life will be long, many things. So the cakraśodhana, purification of the cakras—unless you purify your chakras, it does not matter. You can read many chakras, try to practice on the chakras, nothing. We have an energy which is going to our body. If you touch someone, this energy is going to you. So, of course, our parents, our very good friends, etc., we hug them. It is a kind of social behavior, but better not to touch, and therefore, you see, we are always folding our hands. You go to the Asian countries, from India, China, Tibet, and many other countries, like Bangkok, Hong Kong, and Singapore, everywhere. When you go to their aeroplane, they will greet you like this. The Indians are forgetting, but Singapore Airlines and all these, Bangkok, Hong Kong, Singapore, etc., they even do it in the office when you go, they greet you like this. It was here also. There were many times pictures of Jesus and the Holy Mother. All the time we were greeting like this. Now it came second. But the energy of my hand and your hand—we do not know what was in your hand. So your hand is in one, and my hand is in the other. So, in the evening when you come home, or when you go to the bathroom, or when you are alone, you should purify the energy from your palms, from your hands. Yes? And how? Do it like this. Do it like this. Come on. It should become hot. Burn it, all this negative energy. Hot and hot. Hot and hot. More, more, more. The fire should come down. Yes, yes, and now hold it like this. Now, all the negative energy, whatever we looked at, whatever we touched, even some walls and even some staircases, we are touching this, and now it is purified. Your hands, your hands, your energy, that is it. How we can purify, like we clean your hands, we clean our hands only skin, but this technique, we are purifying all the nerve systems, the purification of the heart, intense time. Everything, Sāttvik, then the Chakras are good. Now, in Sanskrit letters or the Hindi language. The Hindi language is, how do you call them, from the Sanskrit also. So the Sanskrit letters are 52, 52. Now, these eight chakras: Mūlādhāra, Svādhiṣṭhāna, Maṇipūra, Anāhata, Viśuddhi, and Ājñā. These five chakras have the 52 petals, and each petal has a different resonance, the Bīja Mantra of that chakra. Bīja Mantra means the seed. Now, one chakra has the major seed of it. Let us say we put one seed in the earth, and the flower will come. How many petals do we have in the flower? And in the middle is the seed. So you see, it is the nature that connects yogic science with nature. And each petal has one resonance. That resonance is called one alphabet. So when we come to the seed, I spoke before yesterday that there is a seed in the navel. Our soul is not here. Our jīvā is not here, neither in the heart. It is in the navel. It is in the navel. And from here, our life begins. And from this, it is in our navel. Our voice begins from here. Those children who cannot speak, they cannot hear, so they have no movement of the sound of the navel. But there are certain alphabets or letters that first begin from the navel, so sit straight and touch your navel; the first letter is called E. So, A, then A, or you can say A, from where it goes, that is here, A, A. So when you say A, it is going out, but when I say A, it goes to the neighbor. So, this vocal, this sound is mixing. You have 12 letters, 26. And we have 52. So we have two, we lost it, one lost it. So here is A, so say A, A,... You see, there is no movement; it is empty. So you say "A," but say "A, A..." So there is "A." Now something is missing, and that is called Devanāgarī. Dev with God. Devnāgrīk means a citizen, the citizen of the divine. Not a country, but in this creation of God. Sir, A, U, M then becomes the proper Oṁ. So we said, say, only earth created the earth, kuṇḍalinī awakening. That is the real resonance of the earth chanting. Yeah, but do not just think, "Now I know this, and I will teach others." There, this earth has four petals, and these four petals you do not know. So, you still do not know. Yes. So, everybody says, "Aaaaaa, this is śānti." It comes again from the navel. And if we say peace, peace only is in the mouth. Okay, look, say, Pṛthu. We are going to plant a tree, so we are ten minutes late. Call the pastor, and those who came from other countries as well. Many blessings. Have a good flight. Om Om Śānti.
