The Foundation of Spiritual Progress

The foundation of true knowledge is authentic spiritual texts and devotion. Seek silent retreat for practice. Yoga cultivates well-being and awakens love, which is devotion. This devotion extends to all creatures, not only to God. Service to all beings is service to the divine. Selfish love causes unhappiness; true, selfless love is often dormant. Authentic scriptures are eternal and unchanging. There are two kinds of texts: authentic, revealed scripture and remembered tradition or personal commentary. Personal understanding can be mistaken, so one must rely on the pure, original words. Half-knowledge is dangerous and makes noise. The guru's direct words are the perfect mantra. Follow the guru's instruction and service to receive grace.

"Service to all creatures is service to me."

"May the moon and sun change their direction, but the words of the saints will not change."

Adoration to Śrī Dīpānārāyaṇa Bhagavān. Jaya. Adoration to Śrī Śrī Devapurīṣa Mahādeva. Jaya. Adoration to Dharmasamrāṭ Guru Svāmī Mādhvānārāyaṇa Bhagavān. Jaya. To the eternal Satya Sanātana Dharma, victory. Adoration to our spiritual lineage. To all spiritual seekers, to the Mahāprabhū Dīp Satsaṅg Foundation: Lucky are they who can come here. This should not be only during seminars or retreats. It would be very good if someone wished to spend one, two weeks, or a month in silent meditation and performed their sādhanā. It does not matter from which country you come. Simply announce yourself and get the information. I would advise you to do silent meditation, āsanas, and prāṇāyāmas here in this āśrama. In yoga, we call this Ekāntavāsa, which means you go and stay for a while in a silent, remote area. Of course, every spiritual place has its discipline and rules you must follow. Then you will gain more energy. Yoga in Daily Life is designed for the well-being of humans. That practice of Yoga in Daily Life should awaken in their heart a true love. That means devotion. Now, devotion means not only to God. Mahāprabhujī said to Holī Gurujī when Holī Gurujī took the sannyāsa dīkṣā. Then Holī Gurujī, with folded hands, asked Mahāprabhujī, "Lord, in which way shall I serve you? I am yours. My wish is only to be in your Sevā." Mahāprabhujī said, "Then follow my instructions. Service to all creatures is service to me." Not only humans, but protect all other creatures. Protect this beautiful planet. Now, you cannot do that unless you have love. And that love we have—no one can exist or live anymore if there is no love—but that love is dormant. The selfish part of love is active, and that will make you again and again unhappy. So, devotion to every creature: when you take care of one plant in your home, in a flower vase or flower pot, it is your devotion. And so, while practicing systematic yoga exercises, which are based according to the ancient literatures... Because the ancient literatures, the authentic books—the authors of those books left this planet thousands of years before, but they are still here with us. Guru Nānak Sāhib said about the Guru Granth Sāhib. 'Grantha' means holy book. 'Grantha' means where the words of great masters are put down. And it is said: "Guru Grantha Sāheb, Koḍjanie"—do understand, or do accept—you should know it is the embodiment of Gurudev. In whose heart is the truth, in that truth, he or she will realize this is not a book but Gurudev himself. Holī Gurujī said often, "May the moon and sun change their direction, but the words of the saints will not change." That is final. There is no one who has higher authority to change the Guruvākya. And if you change it, then it is not that Guruvākya; it is manipulated words. That is what we see many times: people write a commentary but in a different way. They put their thought, they put their culture, they put their feelings, they put their imagination, and therefore many, many holy books or ancient literatures are not properly translated. And we change; we say, "Oh, now it is a modern world, people do not like such words." It means you have a doubt. You have a doubt. It means you are not sure, and when you are not sure, you do not have trust. And if you have doubt, then you have no right to touch that Grantha, that Buddha. From the very beginning, it is said there are two: Śruti and Smṛti. Śruti means that which was spoken by great saints or God. That is called Śrutīya. Satguru Dev is Brahmaniṣṭha Śrutīya. 'Brahmaniṣṭha' means the knower of the Brahman, so do not see his or her body. In his or her body, they have to act according to the nature, the law of nature, but they are the knower of the Brahman. Do not see if your aeroplane is long, or wide, or round, if you got good drinking or eating or not, turbulence and all this. But think that this airplane brought you to your destination safely. Therefore, in whose heart is that true love, within that truth which is within you, you will get that realization. Otherwise, you will have different relations, different opinions, and then you will give a commentary which is not acceptable, because that was not from realization. There are two kinds of books. 'Pramāṇik' is called grantha, authentic. 'Pramāṇik' means accepted. And the second is called 'kathit'—just you spoke and you wrote it. Pramāṇik is the ancient. Pramāṇik is the eternal, and these words are words of the Gurudev. And so, Brahmaniṣṭha, the knower of this Brahman, and Śrotriya, who can speak about that. What he speaks is called Śruti. We are listening. He is a speaker, and we are listeners. We are all called the Śruti. He is the Śruti, and we are the Śruti. So he is speaking, and we are receiving, listening. That is called the śruti. And that śruti remains smṛti. So now, what you spoke or what I speak is a śruti. And now, what you understand and how you will tell others, that comes out of your memory; that is called smṛti. Now, your memory can be mistaken. And so what you read, how you understand, and how you think and put into words, there are a lot of differences. And therefore, the ancient scriptures, which were written in the Sanskrit language and in Sanskrit written in the form of the poem we call śloka, that you cannot change. If you change every linguistic, one will say there is something wrong. It is not the origin. The real, the pure, is pure. Now we are mixing all different things, different breeds: donkey and horse together, so neither remains horse nor donkey, but they become a mule. So, half-knowledge is very dangerous. And Mahāprabhujī said, "Small knowledge makes more noise." When you drive a beautiful big car and pass through, you hardly notice some car was passing. And a small moped, till one kilometer, you hear this. That is a small knowledge. Small knowledge you have makes more noise: "I know, and I did this, and I can do that, and this, like that." Tell, relax. You see the Bhagavad Gītā. It is nearly 5,000 years old, but till now, no one could change one letter, but the commentary many people changed. So Guruvākya is such a perfect thing, you cannot move this or that side. It is such a nail you put in, you cannot take out. And that is why it is said, "Mantra-mūlaṁ guru-vākyaṁ." The words of your master are the best mantra for you. Why? Because if you follow the guru-vākya and guru-sevā, then will come the kṛpā. So "mokṣa-mūlaṁ guru-kṛpā." So, śruti and smṛti. These are the words of the great saints. And we do not know, therefore we have to follow that. We are the travelers.
