Nature of a Sadhu

Compassion is the essential root of spiritual life and practice. The true self is of the nature of pure consciousness and bliss, beyond all dualities and attributes. Service and meditation upon the guru's grace are the supreme support for liberation from karma. Sattvic thoughts and devotion purify the body and mind, advancing spiritual development. A genuine saint embodies humility and sees only the good. One must not abandon compassion while life remains in the body. Spiritual practice involves unwavering devotion and a pilgrimage of the heart, seeking divine union beyond mere physical travel. Do not speak harsh words or depend upon others, but rely on the truth within. The world is a transient illusion; hold fast to devotion and truth to attain liberation.

"Dharma’s root is compassion. The root of sin is pride."

"This world is the māyā of the dream. It is just like a dream."

The bhajan was composed very beautifully. Hari Om, everybody. How are you today? Relaxed, warm, very good. These bhajans were written by our Gurudev—one bhajan by Kabīr Dās and one other bhajan. Each and every word has divine meanings. Each and every thought is vibrating in the body. And each and every positive thought is bringing good health to the body. And for those who are constantly repeating them with the prāṇa, the mantra, then, in the body, automatically the negative thoughts will not come. And those thoughts are again revolving within ourselves to advance our spiritual development. We have heard many things these days, because of the situation in the whole world. But those who have sattvic thinking, sattvic nourishment, and contemplation on God, this will definitely elevate their self to the highest. We see now these last two days, and also before one week, two weeks, there was also every great saint. A saint is not only a sadhu with a cloth, but a sadhu is that—sādhu, sādhu means very humble, very peaceful. That’s called a sadhu, who is a... A sādhu awakening in the heart, in the feelings, in the thoughts, in the behaviors, always will see good, positive. That’s called a sādhu, sādhuā, very humble, very humble. That is a sādhuā. And therefore it is said, "One bhajan." Sādhavai, there’s a bhajan: "Sādhavai, oh my brothers, those sādhus, you are that sādhus." Others may talk a lot, read many books, but it is on the surface. Feeling inside, sādhu, so feel thyself and don’t bring any negative thoughts, or don’t be angry, don’t be also sad. When someone says something, and we are either good, then we are very happy. And if there is something, then we are not good. So, that is, Gurujī has told many things, beautiful bhajans and beautiful stories. Now, Bharat—we call Bharat, we can say India, we can say this dharmātmā. Dharmātmā, which one? This country. And there have been many who have dayā. So it is said, dayā dharam kā mūl hai, dayā dharam kā mūl hai. Dayā, dayā means merciful. Dayā dharam kā mūl hai. Mūl means the roots, and dharma is that dayā dharam kā root hai, that roots of that. For example, a tree, and these roots are in the earth. And this strong wind comes, the rain comes, the very hard times, the hard time, the cold time, the snow, the glaciers. But this tree is there all the time, because it said, "I am here for all." Tulsi says, do not abandon compassion when life is ebbing away. Tulsi says, compassion is the root of dharma. The root of sin is pride. And the roots of pāpa, meaning sin, are... Dharma’s root is compassion. So the roots of this are that when we are negative, when we are cruel, when we are in many things, then it is. Pāpa, pāpa means the very negative, like a cooler, like a coral of the corals. Be humble, be humble, be kind. Be kind and be helpful. It doesn’t matter how hard it is. Jab lag ghaṭ mein prāṇa hai. Now, it is said, how long should I wait for this? It is said, "Jab lag ghaṭ mein prāṇa hai." Ghaṭ means the body. In this body of ours, as long as we have life, we should not go towards pāpa. But when life is gone, prāṇa is gone, then only the body is lying there. We can do nothing, but till the prāṇa is inside, we will not give up. Hey Rām, hey Bhagavān, hey Prabhu, hey Śiva, hey Kṛṣṇa, hey Gurudeva, hey Mahāpuruṣa. That is all for now. Therefore, dayā, dayā dharma kā mūla hai, pāpa mūla hai abhimāna. Tulsī dayā na chhoḍīye, jab lākha ghaṭe prāṇa. And that is the Bhārat. This Bharat, this Hindustan, this what we are calling, is that earth. As I told you, Holy Gurujī, when he was in Europe, they said, "Why, Gurujī, so many incarnations in India, not in other countries?" Guruji said, "Well, in diamond, in diamond, what is the mice? Only, will come only the golden." And where there is coal, in that, there will come only coal. So this country is like this. Time to time, it is coming. But still, all you will see, the cruelty is not in Indians’ blood. Yeah, many, they will be decent. There are some, they will take money or this and then and that, but they will not hold someone’s throat to kill that someone. Now they are coming. And even they are crossing to kill the animals, but you will see, long ago, even they were very humble people. You can’t—we cannot see the blood. You will see how many Indians, if they have a little blood, they will, oh God, yes. See that anyone, any Indians, can you see the blood? Can you take blood from someone like this? No one, even when from the... Injection or something, also not only myself will have fear, but my mother or my father or my sister or my brother will say, "Oh God, yes, that is a dayā." And others will cook in front of you, will kill one chicken. "Oh my God, let’s see how many." But now they have been lost, that life of humbleness, kindness, and God. But in there, it is, but many who came from different souls from somewhere here and there, and still that is on that side, so they are both very humble. Calmness, and that’s why we are doing the prathānā, we do the prayers. When we do the prayers, we pray to God, "O Lord, O Lord, no matter how much you are in pain, but you, Lord, don’t leave us. It doesn’t matter how I am, I pray to thee, my God, Gurudev. Even in a very hard time, but please don’t forgive, forget me." Be with me that it is, and there are many, many... Millions, and now in whole countries, Europe, everywhere in the whole earth, many, many people got the knowledge. Many did not know; they think, "Yes, animals are for eating," all in the killing. But now you will see how many Westerners. Europe, Australia, America, etc., many countries, and they are all getting towards vegetarian, and they said, "Oh my God, why did my parents give me the meat from my very, very... they made my age very, very little." After they said, "Oh, God," and now there are many people who are sorry. They said to me many times, "Swāmījī, what to do?" I said, innocently, what you did, God will forgive. But now you know, and still you are doing, then, of course, God will give. That kind of knowledge that you know, now God will give us some negative things. God will not give, but it will be there. So, Dayā, and that’s why many names of the Dayā. Women have the name Daya, and men also have the name Daya. Daya Ramji, Daya Shal, Daya Singhji, Devi Singhji, Daya, everybody is liking. And also, women have the dayā. Daya, Dayālu, Gurudev, Gurudev, Dayālu, bhajans are very much. So, my dear, today think: where is it in my life? It doesn’t matter which religion, but you should know that blood, that fear, that pain, that it will come, otherwise it will come back to us again. So dayā is very, very pure. And those pure thoughts in our body and yoga. We have many yogas, many, many, many yogas. Patañjali, we have the Patañjali was making four different parts: the karma yogīs, bhakti yogīs, rāja yogīs, and jñāna yogīs. But not there, there are many, many other yogīs that are still living, maybe. And they have a cave, and in that cave, maybe their body is not there, but that cave, there is such a vibration. When we come to the cave, immediately the radiance is coming, and that’s why people were going to the Himalayas. Now we have many vehicles, and also helicopters and horses. But for many, many years, people were going to Badrināth or Kedārnāth or Gaṅgotrī, etc. They left home, telling the parents and all the families and all the village people, "I am going on a yātrā, a yātrā for what? To Dvārakā." And they had shoes. How long was there snow? Very cold. The shoes were lost, but... Still, they were going slowly, slowly. There was no road; they didn’t know where it was. So they were asking the people there who were on the hills, and they said, "Go there, walk there, go down till the river, slowly, slowly, then come up again, further again, come there." This was now; they were only thinking, "I will have a darśan." Of the Bhagavān, that mandir, etc., usko kaitā hai uske bhāv. Bhāv means that what we call the all humbleness, and that’s called, I will say this something. So they are coming there, then that is we call God. Now I am going to God, I am going to God. I’m coming to the temple, I’m coming to the temple, then. You come to the temple, you become yourself the temple, and then they go round and round the temple, and that is called the era, the era of "in my body and in God." It becomes God itself; there is no other God. And so they come back, and they were coming back, bhāva. Then people, they thought in the villages, "Maybe he died." I hope they will come, and many died. So when people came back in that village, they found out, "Oh, he is coming." All from villages, people came and gave to this person so unwelcoming, so much, and they said, "What have you brought for us? Little prasāda, very little, some from the..." Down to Haridwar, from Haridwar, take some prasad from the rice, and that rice they brought everyone. So they brought the rice. There was no money, but people gave them. That was their yātrā, and that also, you know, that many... Christian, they go in the mountains high up, and this and there, yes. So, bhāva, others go in helicopter, they lift down, go to temple, and say, "I am the minister, I am there, please, please, this," and God said, "What are you doing here?" That bhāva, that bhāva is, "Hey Gurudev, even I will die, I should come back and come to Thy bhakta." When I die, I will come back. Please don’t separate from me and the other one, God. When who is coming? Your bhakti will be young, and God will be little. The other one will be older but always circulating left and right, left and right. So, viśraṅga nahī, mar jāo par māṅgū nahī, mar jāo par māṅgū nahī. Even I will die, but I will not ask. Something like that, that is a sādhanā, and that sādhanā is given by great saints. So the religion is that, not killing animals. Now, they are many, many in many countries, and in India also, the religion is only for the money, or... For power and this and that, they who is that humbleness? There is they are love. All other love, because we see different religion also: our god and our god is also their god, so they are all one, but there is duality. It is not good, therefore we shall feel humility, pure, pure... do not think, no greed, no many kinds of negative things. One day this, then that. Become us like Mīrābāī. Mīrābāī was only three, four, or five years old, and she said, "Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa." This story is very big, but that was, and Mirabai, now we are all remembering her. And she’s in heaven by the God with a Krishna, but hard it was also the heart, but she did not give up. "I am thy whatever it is, I am thy." That’s it. So we practice, and again, there is our Kākabaṭīśī, which is always nice here, so every... Day, I’m peaceful. Slowly, slowly, make very nice for you. And people have taken away somewhere. Where is that? Oh, they’re changing all. So, 32 śikṣā pāṭ, Prabhū Gurudev. Tum hī sab devan ke devā, sadā dīje caraṇau kī sevā. So, Chāchā Chandan Jī, śītal rehna. We were on there. Chaccha, chandan sītal jī rehna. Oh, my friend, be so humble, nice, comfortable, very pleasurable. That means, like a moon. Chaccha, Chandan. Chaccha, Chandan is moon, or Chandan is the wood that is also like a moon. karwa bachan kabu nahi kehna. And therefore, Gurujī said that karwa bachan kabu nahi kehna, don’t speak. The harsh word, harsh word, but there are some places when you have to be very harsh. But harsh is different. Many times, when the little child is not very naughty now, then the mother will give a little bit of "chick chick," but that inside, the mother doesn’t want. But from outside, little bit, yes. So, but don’t say any time hard words. Don’t depend on someone. Don’t depend on the someone. And then someone may be, but then you will not be. So between these two, it will not be 100% one. Many, maybe some, but mostly, you want to ask something. I will give it to you in five days. I will give it to you in 10 days. Or this, or my horse. Can you give my horse? Now you are riding somewhere, didn’t come for one month. Many, many things. So, give up on anyone; don’t depend on anyone. What karma is written in your mind, in your soul, in your ātmā. So whatever karma the Vidhātā has written, that will be with you, not others, not anyone. There are many, many beautiful stories. Jagat Swapnaki Maya. Gurujī writes, the alphabet J, Jagat Swapnaki Maya. This world is the māyā of the dream. It is just like a dream. Today we are like this, and in the morning we are not anywhere. It is gone. So, jagat svapna kī māyā. This world, everything what we see in the world, it is a dream, is māyā. Me kyu bhar māyā? Therefore, in this māyā, why you are losing in this? You go and you are saying this and that, but it will not be that what you want to have. Sachā chhodo ās parāī, jo kus karam likhā so pāī. Jājā jagat svapn kī māyā, iss māyā mein kyun bar māyā? So don’t be, become an illusion. Jājā jhūṭh chhodo re bhai, so Jājā jhūṭh chhodo re bhai. Don’t lie. Without truth, you will not go. The liberation is the letter that holds your truth, your... Gurudev, your Gurudev be mantras. Everything, hold it, hold it, and don’t give half back. What you, what you promised, keep it. Maybe half, you will not be there, and that’s very hard also. Yes, I got my heart, myself. I can tell you one day the story. It is very... it was not. But I want. That’s it. Tāṭā ṭāk rakho bhaktikā. Tata taak, taat, taat rakho bhaktikā. Tata taat rakho, taat is not, taat is wrong. So whatever you want to do, you should not lose. If you have this bhakti, you will get the palace of the king in mukti, as mukti. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be timid. Don’t be afraid. Be strong. Everything will be further. Next time, this is what? Thank you, your bhajan was very good, everybody.
