Dharma danda
The Dharma Daṇḍa is the principle that protecting dharma ensures its protection of you. We have learned about our inner self, not the outside. In ancient times, kings first bowed to their gurus. Upon receiving the crown, they were no longer for their family but for the whole country. If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. This principle applies to kingdoms and spiritual lineages. The daṇḍa, or staff, is the dharma daṇḍa. It is not for beating but is the principle itself. A guru once struck a king's head three times with the daṇḍa, saying to protect dharma. This staff symbolizes authority for all, not for one's own circle. Similarly, in Christianity, the pastoral staff is the shepherd's daṇḍa. At the Kumbh Melā, spiritual leaders carry the daṇḍa as a traditional symbol of this authority. The daṇḍa must be treated with holiness. Like a shepherd's dog that protects the flock following its master's instruction, the daṇḍa represents the duty to protect. Uphold the principle, and it will uphold you.
"Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If we protect dharma, if we uphold it, then dharma will protect us."
"This daṇḍa is the dharma daṇḍa. That dharma gives daṇḍa."
