Dharma danda

The Dharma Daṇḍa is the principle that protecting dharma ensures its protection of you. We have learned about our inner self, not the outside. In ancient times, kings first bowed to their gurus. Upon receiving the crown, they were no longer for their family but for the whole country. If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. This principle applies to kingdoms and spiritual lineages. The daṇḍa, or staff, is the dharma daṇḍa. It is not for beating but is the principle itself. A guru once struck a king's head three times with the daṇḍa, saying to protect dharma. This staff symbolizes authority for all, not for one's own circle. Similarly, in Christianity, the pastoral staff is the shepherd's daṇḍa. At the Kumbh Melā, spiritual leaders carry the daṇḍa as a traditional symbol of this authority. The daṇḍa must be treated with holiness. Like a shepherd's dog that protects the flock following its master's instruction, the daṇḍa represents the duty to protect. Uphold the principle, and it will uphold you.

"Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If we protect dharma, if we uphold it, then dharma will protect us."

"This daṇḍa is the dharma daṇḍa. That dharma gives daṇḍa."

We begin by offering the blessings received from our Gurudev and by giving our praṇām. Oṁ Namaḥ Śrī Prabhu Dīpanārāyaṇam... Hamsabhādāsa Prabhu Śaraṇāparāyaṇam, Hamsabhādāsa Śaraṇāparāyaṇam. Om Namaḥ Śrī Prabhudī, Hamsabhādāsa Prabhu Śaraṇāparāyaṇam. Asaba Dāsa Prabhu Śaraṇa Parāyaṇam. Om Nusṛī Prasṛī... Āraṇya Bhagavān Kī Jai, Devādhi Dev Deveś Parameśvara Kī Jai. Throughout the day we have been calling, "Om Śānti, Om Śānti." And finally, śānti has arrived. Om Shanti, Om Shanti, and finally, peace unto peace. Now we have the Śānti. Thank you, everybody. We pray to our Guru Paramparā and say thank you very, very much. Over these five, six, seven days, you have engaged in your sādhanā, anuṣṭhāna, and practice. So, thank you very much, Gurudev. We pray to the cosmic sky—how beautiful it is. Indra is the king of the waters; he brings us rain. From time to time, Indra has blessed us so that we have always had beautiful greenery here. Sometimes it was very dry, though generally not, but at those times dust would come. This, too, is kṛpā, the grace of our Gurudevs. We have learned many different things, learning mostly about our inner self, not the outside. We were not only talking about prānāyāmas, āsanas, and kriyās, but also receiving knowledge from many different ṛṣis. In the last few days, we also learned something from the Mahābhārata. You know, even in ancient times, what we call the king’s times, life was not easy. They were very spiritual. They would always first go to their Gurudeva, the ṛṣis and brāhmaṇas, and bow down. Similarly, after Christianity and Islam arose, their followers also bowed down to the God in whom they believed. The Muslims say Allah. You can say Allah, we can say Brahman, you can say the Father. If we can all understand together, we will not have any problems. Yet, you know that many people are there, and many have their ego. Sometimes, though everyone has a guru, a problem arises when kings received the authority to rule. They received the crown, and the Tilak, the paṇḍit, etc., became the guru, and they had to follow this. After going and performing strict observances, they had one boundary. And within this boundary, even the king of kings had to adhere strictly to dharma. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If we protect dharma, if we uphold it, then dharma will protect us. First, we should protect dharma; then dharma will protect us. Dharma, dharma hit, dharma cha. So, dharma—you know what dharma is. Everybody knows what dharma is. In other countries, to speak of dharma, we would say spirituality, the spiritual. So, dharma rakṣita dharma. If you protect dharma, dharma will protect you. In those times, they always had to first go and adore the master, the guru. What they give you, blessing you with the tilak and crown, is this: it is the dharma. It is said: "The crown which you have on your head, it is not for your family, not only for your house, and not because you... When the crown is on the head, you are no longer just for the family, but for the whole country." Now you are for the whole country, everywhere. Therefore, whenever they came, they would first place their crown. And once the crown is on your head, immediately others come to protect your crown and you. Immediately, there comes a protection, akin to what we now have in politics—and thanks to God that they are changing all the time. Otherwise, it would just be one king after another, king and king and king... But nowadays, they have lost the principle. They did not take up the dharma. The whole country is your dharma. And now you are a king. You are a king, but... sorry... the king is for them, so it is a great thing. So, if you know the dharma, what is the dharma? You are not working for your family or only for your friends. When you sit on your chair and the crown is on your head, then it is for all. And if someone makes a mistake, that king will make everything clean—not to kill them, no, but to give such knowledge that one says, "Yes, that’s right," and the other will also say, "Yes, that’s right." This is dharma. So, let’s say the king now becomes dharma. But now, this dharma I have to get everyone to follow as dharma, then we will also protect you. A dharma, the dharma. A king has a dharma, and he will give all dharmas, and these dharmas will come back and protect him. Do you understand? When you go to war, all his warriors will surround the king, and he, the king, will take care of all others. So, the king is the dharma, and dharma is protecting this dharma, and therefore this dharma protects again the dharma. Dharma, if you protect that, protects and will protect the dharma. This applies to kingdoms or guru-paramparās. Now, for example, let’s say I am nothing here. I am like you, but it is said Gurudev has given me this daṇḍā, this coin daṇḍā, this stick. This daṇḍa is not for beating someone or because we cannot walk and need it. No. This is the dharma daṇḍa. There was one ṛṣi who was doing something. The king said, "I have a dharma, and I will say all dharmas should follow the dharma." What is that? If anyone does bad, we will beat him. But there is one exception: no one can beat the king. Then the Gurudev comes. The Gurudev said three times, he put on the head of the king this daṇḍa. One, two, three. One, two, three. Why? Because that guru said—or you can say a priest said, etc. So three times he struck the king’s head—a king! Not only that you beat anybody. But, King, it is that dharma is in this daṇḍa. And three times I beat you on your head: Dharmarakṣita, Dharmarakṣita, Dharmarakṣita. Protect, protect, protect the dharma. King, you cannot say that nobody can hit me. It is that daṇḍa. Yes, daṇḍa. So that daṇḍa is the dharma daṇḍa. That dharma gives daṇḍa. Dandika means when you have to go to prison, or you go somewhere like this, yes. So that is dharma. This daṇḍa has dharma. Because you or I can change anything, so the crown and this, then you have this in your hand. Not for your family, not for your friends, but for all, all, all. Dharma Rakṣita, Dharma Rakṣita, Dharma Rakṣita. Therefore, that Gurudeva struck the daṇḍa three times on the head of the king. "Hey King, you have this daṇḍa in your hand. I give you this, and first I give you on your head. Dharma Rakṣita, Dharma Rakṣita, Dharma Rakṣita. Protect the dharma. Protect the dharma.... O King, what is the good? Everything, dharma, then you should protect it." Similarly, we are all here, and we are doing our dharma. We went with our dharma, and we learned about dharma a lot, and you will respect that. So, similarly, for example, a little child is crying, or little children do something, and then you beat the child; then the child will cry. And what is the cry? It is the dharma. And this dharma, the father will get it. So, because that is pure, but daṇḍa is also that which gives you knowledge. Don’t cry, don’t do, don’t take daṇḍa, daṇḍa, daṇḍa. And so this is all three: our body, our prāṇa, our knowledge, our protection, and our freedom. And therefore, when we are sitting, we are sitting, we know. And now, here, for example, I got this place, this, what will you call it, we call it siṅghāsan. But this is not in my power. It is in power, this. And this is not me; it is Gurujī Mahāprabhujī, Holy Gurujī, or your other Gurujīs that are there. Now they passed away, but they are still there only. They told me, "Now take in your hand. Protect, protect, protect." Therefore, Śaṅkarācāryajī also has this daṇḍa. Christianity had the same tradition; they made it. We are talking about the people, kingdoms, etc. So, Christianity, they made the daṇḍa for whom? No, no, no. It is for the sheep. This is the daṇḍa of the sheep, because Jesus and Jesus’s fathers were with the sheep, and this is a sheep’s daṇḍa, and therefore you get this daṇḍa. Yes, you know that? You know everybody? Nobody says ba-ba-ba-ba. No, no,... no. Don’t block your mouth. You should say it with a more open mouth. If you can, then at least you say that. Be, be... yes. So this is Bhagavān, we call the holy, holy daṇḍa of Jesus. And this is from the sheep. Can somebody tell me? Stand up and say, "Yes," and what it is. Maybe Dr. Shanti can tell her as well. Shanti, do you know? Do you know anybody? Oh, my dear, you must not lose the Christianity in the yoga, in the life. As Daṇḍa is also here. So, you know, the Holy Father, the Prince, or the Bishop, it doesn’t matter, everyone, this is the Prince, because the head, and the head is that of the sheep’s shepherd, and therefore this is the shepherd. And what we call dharma. Dharma rikṣitaḥ. So therefore, you will see when we go to Kumbh Melā, every Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara has the daṇḍa, and they should always have it. But I said, "My bhaktas are very humble and great, so I don’t need a stick at all." But in the Kumbh Melā, I have to be there. And you will say, "Why is Swāmījī walking with a stick, and they are all going with a stick?" And they gave when they got the Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara position. So first, the head of the Mahāmaṇḍaleśvaras, the Ācārya, first, he will give the soul. They give the tilak before bandit. Everyone will give the shawl and one daṇḍa. So this is a tradition, and this is not only a tradition that I need my stick. I have a good stick. But this is that dharma daṇḍa, and this dharma daṇḍa you should not change or hold carelessly, you should not throw, and if you get it in the hand, you should treat it with holiness. This is your... you can hold my stick; it means you have a very holy daṇḍa in you. So daṇḍa means stick. There are many languages, and every language is a different language. So, dharma is protected through this daṇḍa, that is, protecting and taking care of the shepherds. So, we call this our dharma vision. Protect our dharma. Don’t go out of it. And not that thing that I am the holy. Daṇḍa is the holy. That world is holy. That mala is in the holy. So these are principles to keep, and when one day you will think, "Ah, let’s go," then you are just, you know what? You become also one shape. So when the daṇḍa will go on, then we will also say be-be-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he-he. All run out of sight. And then, I don’t want to go further, so it is the tiger or the lion, they protect you. And you know, there are some dogs in Hungary? My God, such good dogs. And the dog takes care of all the goats. They go home, they go for eating. But dogs will remain there. Is that true or not? Yes. Is there a Hungarian here, someone? Stand up. Hungarian. And if you have seen this, oh, no, you are not a sheep, sit down. Only one who can tell us about this. So, please, can you tell someone about this? These dogs, how they are protecting the sheep, and no one can go near except their master. And the master said, "Only there, there, the sheep will not go in the other’s field." So, can someone stand up and talk, tell something, a few words? How? What? This? Yeah, can you take the mic? And what instructions are you giving to this dog? That I go, and you should stay here, and all should be there? So you can go and have your lunch, and then you will come back? Yes, it’s just like that. We have traditional breeds, a few types of this kind of special shepherd’s dog in Hungary. They are very humble; they are really following the instructions. So, how do they think? The name of the dogs? Name of the dog? Is the dog only running, or is he making... I don’t know exactly the type of the dog: Puli, Komondor, Kuvas, different types of dogs. We have small and big as well, so it means you are not a Hungarian, maybe. What do you give him in words? That I don’t know the word. How the shepherd is directing the dog, that I don’t know. Have you anyone one, two days with them? Then I know more than you. Thank you, because I was in Hungary, near the capital, Budapest. After, there is a little hill, and there is one there. We had that must be where, at that time, we had a seminar, and we could see there the sheep, and dogs were watching. And also, they were following him, and if they would not follow, the dog will go, the sheep goes, run away. So I want to buy this dog, but they didn’t want to sell, but it should be trained. Otherwise, if you are not... Following and not giving good instructions, then it will become only the street dog. That’s all. So, Master, that’s Master. So that is the Daṇḍa. What is it? Daṇḍa. And Dharma, Dharma Daṇḍa. And so when you are coming to your seminar or in your house near your altar, you should have a daṇḍa of Gurudev there. And when we come to seminar, not all daṇḍa, no, no, only one. That’s it. Not that everybody is coming with a daṇḍa. Then there will be war. So, dharma rakṣita rakṣita. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita. If we follow the dharma, the dharma will protect us. And this daṇḍa will be three times. Dharma, dharma,... dharma rakṣita, dharma rakṣita, dharma rakṣita. Rakṣitā means protect, protect dharma. So is the yoga, so is the dharma, so is the religion. And all we have different religions in the world. They have principle, and that principle is the Dharma. Therefore, and those who are out, they are out. This is so. It is that very good. You have been practicing, you have missed Dharma there, and I hope you had a good time, and you know what’s happening. Because this daṇḍa was there. Why? Because one tree is going to fall down, and three days ago, we had this meeting about our temple. And there is one tree, very big like this. And there was this, what you call, the tennis place. And now, with the water, the earth was going down. And may this fall down out. So we are going to put earth there, lots and lots. We will all be going, and we will sit on it. We sit on it. There, you give me the daṇḍa. So I give you the dharma daṇḍa, and we all will go and sit on this earth. So that is working. He is going on that, so I am not looking, taking care of my... You only, to care of you. But I am everything because that is Dharma. So I hope you had a nice time, and at home, if you have time, you can make your anuṣṭhāna. Those who were doing many years, then you can do this sādhanā, but which is about 23 hours, that we should do only here because of our home, families, our duties, our dharma. Duty means our dharma. So, time to time, we are coming here to work. Thank you, everybody. Many blessings. And it is a Dharma Rakṣo, Dharma Rakṣet.
