We need a Guru

Yoga requires a guru for true guidance, not mere physical practice. The Bhagavad Gītā states both the formless and manifest paths are equal, but for embodied beings, sādhanā is easier with a guru's clear instruction. Modern yoga often lacks this, focusing only on āsana and prāṇāyāma without ethical foundations or genuine knowledge. Many teach without having been properly taught themselves. The guru's grace is essential for perfection; techniques alone are insufficient. Avoid negativity and gossip. Strive to be a light. If you cannot do good, at least do no harm, and you will remain on the path. True yoga integrates prayer, ethical living, and the guru's guidance into daily life.

"Guru kṛpā hi kevalam—when the kṛpā of the Gurudeva, the blessings of the Gurudeva, that is the greatest."

"If you cannot do good, then at least don’t do bad. Then what will happen? We are standing on the path, neither going this way nor that, and then automatically it will go to the white path."

Good evening, all bhaktas, sisters, and brothers. Welcome to this beautiful hall. It has been a beautiful day. There were many thoughts I wished to share, and I was thinking that Mahāprabhujī may guide me to speak a little differently. So, let us speak again of yoga. Yoga, karma sukośila—yoga is perfected when we perform good karma. This is written extensively in Śrī Bhagavad Gītā. In the twelfth chapter, Arjuna said to Kṛṣṇa, "O Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa, I wish to know what is good for those here in this world. Which is best—that which is here, or that which is in Nirakārī?" Sākāra and Nirākāra. Sākāra is what we all are. Nirakārī is not invisible. So, O Bhagavān, which path should I accept? Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa said to Arjuna, "Arjuna, both are equal." But for us who are Sākarīs, who dwell in this living body, it is easier for us to perform sādhanā. What I learn from the Guru, he will give clear instructions to the disciples. That which is Nirakāra, we do not know. Therefore, it is said we believe in God, but which God? Where is that God? We do not know. Nirākār we cannot see. This means we may think we are doing something ourselves, and we think God has said it. There is Rāghava and Sakala, so there is a teacher. The teacher will instruct us and make corrections. Therefore, the teacher is essential. But the words he gives are also nirākār. Even in a book we can read, but that is not what Kṛṣṇa directly said. You could go sit on a hill, by a riverbank, in a forest, or at home. How will you gain that knowledge? Yet, when you go far, automatically you will come further. Therefore, Arjuna, it is easy and good for us. We should not let the mind wander, thinking, "I don’t want anything here or there." No one will tell us anything. We came from our mother’s womb without teachers, and we will go back as we came. We must traverse this path. In that way, we know we are thinking and doing, but still the teacher, the master, will make corrections. In the same way is yoga—our sādhanā, our yoga in daily life. Now in this world, yoga is coming up again, like mushrooms in the forest. Every mushroom appears, but the mushroom is only there, and it will become again. What can be done? It remains as it is. So, merely doing āsana, prāṇāyāma, closing the eyes and thinking something, meditation—what is this? In this world now, people have come out learning and teaching yoga. They have no knowledge about it. They do not give proper explanations. They say, "We give conferences, we go to seminars, we teach and learn yoga," but nobody teaches them, "Don’t eat meat, don’t drink alcohol, don’t use tobacco." No. Now in the world, of course, our Prime Minister of India, the great Modijī, has done great things. Very, very great. No one could do this other than Modījī. In just one lecture at the United Nations—a very large conference with countries from all over the world—he gave that assembly great knowledge. He said, "If you accept, please, then we should have yoga as international." It is said that about 90% or more of all countries accepted yoga. A few did not immediately say yes. They said, "Don’t worry." When the majority said yes, those who hadn't later sent a message saying they were also okay with it. Modiji’s first words were, "Yoga is the science of the humans." So many, many people came. You know everything, my dear. It is great. So many are doing it, of course, at least eight. But many people just say, "Okay, yoga is relevant," and they are doing many different things. They just don’t know anything. They are only like the tail of a dog. Others are great. Sometimes things happen like this or that, but now those who practice yoga are only focusing on the physical body, concentration, and maybe something from books—that’s all. At the same time, there are many, many good yoga schools. They are giving that yoga which means raising up, and that becomes like a great holy practice. Exercises and meditations are very good. God is nothing, but without the body, everything is nothing. But how to go further? That is the point. So many now begin to make it like this, and to make money more than anything from everywhere. But we need a guru, and that guru will teach you. It is not that others are making many things—conferences, etc., collecting machines, etc. That is not yoga. So my dears, you have yoga. You are great yogīs. How many years have you been teaching this yoga I am talking about? Every year, every month, every day, till now, constantly teaching. Still, Mahāprabhujī is giving so much knowledge, so much knowledge. It is said that from our brains, what we talk about as science, this is a great, very good thing. We are all in this age; we need our science. But the ancient systems, where there is a guru, that is another science, and everybody accepts that. In science, it is like a dry stone, and with a great chance, it is like nectar. So, whatever, there is nothing wrong. Science—many, many people are doing great things. But mostly they go home, or they go to their religion and bow down. So, Guru Kṛpāhi Kevalaṁ Śiṣya Ānanda Maṅgala. Gurujī. So, Guru kṛpā hi kevalam—when the kṛpā of the Gurudeva, the blessings of the Gurudeva, that is the greatest. Only Guru kripa, Guru hi śiṣya hi akh, and the disciple attains perfection. You all have so much knowledge. How much yoga in your life, the different kinds of science of yoga have you received? But it is said, if you get one thing, you will be perfect. Here and there, this and many, many techniques—techniques alone will get you nothing. Of course, we have to do āsanas, prāṇāyāmas, body movements, etc. But the reality is the path, and which path we are on. So, you have this. You should learn and give this knowledge to others, and not think you have no knowledge. You should know that you have our Gurudev here. Guru Paramparā. Our Paramparā is from Alagpurījī, from Satya Yuga. Guru to Guru must be. Now there are many who have become the Guru, but they don’t have a Guru. They say, "I am the Guru." So they are asked, "Who is your Gurujī? Don’t you need one?" So it is just nothing. Humbleness, kindness, spiritual devotion, and never backbite anyone. If you talk negatively, sooner or later, that will attack you again. So many people talk negatively, saying that person is not good, this is not good, and that is like this. Definitely, everyone, we are gossiping. But we don’t gossip negatively about ourselves. We are like we are, crystal clear. We are not that. You may have a lot of negative thoughts. What about me? I also have them. So I am swallowing them; I am not giving them further. It is like when someone gives a negative thought, or somebody talks about this, or you see something—this means now we are inside getting all darkness and wasting everything. We get everything, and a little bit, the stomach may be painful, but it purifies inside your stomach. But if you think, "I will tell this person and that person," definitely you and others will also be gone. Those who have no more negativity in the body—if somebody tells you this and that, then what? That person will say, "He said, 'My friend, then you are great.'" And if anyone talks badly about you, he will not listen. In the book, it showed no negative. He will learn to speak positive. No guru, only the corona is in there, but positive smoke or on a positive paṇḍita could leak. My book said it otherwise. How? So a person who is full of light and wisdom is sitting in his room, and someone comes to this person to gossip and backbite. But when he comes there, he is gone. Like what? In this hall, it is dark. Now it’s dark. We come in and we make this fire stick, just like everywhere, light inside. So this one, this one—the dark makes light in this. Anyone said, "Then you will be as a light." But some people are there, many, many people, they cannot sleep without thinking or telling someone something negative. Not about themselves, but to others, and for others, to another. And they say, "Don’t tell others." You know, one person said, "Please, I tell you something, don’t tell anyone, don’t tell anyone." After the next day, after two or three days, the person telephoned: "Hi, hello, hi, my friend, I hope that you didn’t tell anybody." "Yes, my friend, I never said to one. But I ate it all. Yes, friend, you said, 'Don’t tell anyone.' But I didn’t tell anyone. I tell you all that." That means this person has hair, many thorns in the body, cannot sleep, and many things. So please, become this light. There should be no black spot. We should be like that. Then you are a perfect yogī. You are yoga practitioners, and you can teach others. Others who will bite, it means they will bite themselves, and they will not go to the Supreme, but they will go down. So it means, if we cannot do good, then at least don’t do bad. At least remain on this path. If you cannot do good, then at least don’t do bad. Then what will happen? We are standing on the path, neither going this way nor that, and then automatically it will go to the white path. So it doesn’t matter. Mostly, sometimes—sorry, you are not so old. Okay, thank you, but I’m telling you, yes, yes. Example, okay, go on, go on, you see? So she’s older and older. I have a husband; he cannot sleep. One man who is about 95 years old one day said, "I cannot sleep," he himself. So that man called, let’s say, to me: "Ring the man, telephone, Swamiji, how are you, this and that." So I said, "What do you want? It is 2 o’clock, early night." Because, Swamiji, I want to tell you. So tell me, my God, it is so terrible. What is it? Terrible, Swamijī. It is terrible. I am not this, not you, Swamijī. But my neighbor, and I couldn’t sleep all night. So I said, "Oh, that’s good. Now you sleep, and I can’t sleep." So it is like this. So before going to sleep, many, many people tell you something so that they calm down. But others can be okay. Oh, I see. And tell me, and don’t—I will not ask you, I’ll tell you. And then it goes like corona. And therefore, in these times, we don’t talk. And when she does not talk, it goes into your own air. So, anyhow, my dear, these are negative thoughts. I don’t want to talk this thought, maybe, but I’m telling you, and I say that I’m not telling negative, but sometimes I am also telling. But I give negative, straightforward, and clear advice for that person. So anyhow, you and I, we are not perfect. Perhaps a few days before the last day of our life, we will become. So try to do, we try to do, calm, calm. And if someone acts negatively, we will always see a good side. In this way, yoga is not only that we do āsanas and prāṇāyāmas and a little meditation and prayer. At least once a day we should pray here, morning or evening. If we can do morning and evening, twice. So in one year, how many? 725. So, in one year, quickly, but how many do we have? This, our prayer, Prārthanā prayer? You are a yogī, you are a yogandari life. You are the devotees of Mahāprabhujī, Holy Gurujī, Devpurījī. And I am not so good, but still I correct you. So that’s why I am going like a sheep, and one person. You know, the Pope has a stick in his hand. And what is that? Jesus’s head? That’s Jesus’s stick. And what was Jesus’s stick? Because he had sheep, so ask the Pope, "What is this stick?" Or you can tell the priest in the church, and they will know what it is: the holy stick. That’s called for the shepherd, and who is the shepherd now? We all, and the stick is that. So we are all shepherds. We are shepherds, and these are the sheep. We are shepherds, and these are sheep. Therefore, it can stick also sometimes. This is what I am telling you—very simple, but very powerful. Very nice food, very good vegetables, and then we bite inside. Chili, chili... like that. So my chili is affecting you. So, sweating will come out. My dear, all my dear, I am equal to you. I hold you even higher than me. Only Gurudev has given me the duty, so I wish you all the best. I give you mantra, I give you blessings, and I do my best as much as I can. All the best. Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān. Hari Om. It was a beautiful time. A beautiful hall. Everything. And tomorrow I will continue further my Seva somewhere. So, all the best. And we will see each other sometimes, somewhere here or there.
