Guru and disciple

The essence of all spiritual power is Guru's grace alone. Blessings are more powerful than any material possession. This grace is the vitalizing force, like rain reviving a parched landscape. The Guru is one who has attained the supreme state, residing within the heart. A genuine Guru is appointed by the Satguru to care for disciples, not one who merely claims the title. While many instructors in life can be called gurus, the real Guru is singular. True devotion, bhakti, combines the mindful respect of śraddhā with the feeling of love. Through this bhakti toward the Guru, everything can be achieved. Ultimately, the disciple's joy and liberation are founded solely upon this grace.

"Guru Kripa Hi Kevalam. Only and only that powers everything we see."

"Bhakti is equal to love and śraddhā combined. Both mind and feeling together—this is the great quality of bhakti."

Om namaḥ śrī prabhu, namaḥ śabha dāsa prabhu, śaraṇa pārāyaṇam. Om namaḥ śrī prabhu. Good evening, dear sisters, brothers, and all members of Yoga in Daily Life. We are gathered from around the whole world, and there are always large programs in every country. They require great concentration. First and foremost is Guru Kṛpā. We seek Kṛpā. Kripa means blessings. These blessings are more powerful than anything—more than money, gold, or any material possession. Blessings are everything. A blessing is like when there is a scorching sun and no rain; all trees are drying up and everything becomes parched. When the rain comes, even just a few drops, all grass, bushes, trees, birds, animals, and humans rejoice, saying, "Oh, that is great today." That is Guru Kripa Hi Kevalam—Kevalam. Kripa, blessings, everything—Guru Kripa Hi Kevalam. Only and only that powers everything we see. It is Guru Kṛpā. Śiṣyake ānandamaṅgalam virajo vibhāto samī guru kṛpāhi kevalam śiṣyake ānandamaṅgalam. All disciples who have been blessed by that Gurujī, then we are all God, everything. Guru kṛpāhi kevalam, śiṣyake ānandamaṅgalam. Ānanda means all happiness, joy, peace, everything. Kṛpāhi devānām, Guru kṛpāhi kevalam. Who is the Guru? The Guru is one who has received blessings from the Guru. This means the Guru has given blessings to the Guru, but perhaps he will not be perfect. Therefore, the Guru is one who has attained Brahmaloka. Brahmaloka also resides within our heart. For example, consider our parents—our father, our mother. When someone dies, as the sannyāsīs say, we say, "Father or mother or others, they were outside with us." They were all with us externally, but when the body is gone and the ātmā—ātmā hi paramātmā—so now do not cry. Instead, say that my father, my mother, my child, my uncle, my this, my that, my cow, my buffalo, my horse, etc., reside in my heart. It is said, for instance, if you have a lot of money and someone takes it away, yes, that can happen. But in our head, in our brain, in our heart, it exists again. It will return. The leaves of big trees fall, and the trees become completely bare. Yet within a month or a month and a half, the whole tree is again full of leaves and fruits. That is Guru Kṛpā. I am sitting here, and you may think that I am the Guru, that this "I" is the Guru, but I am just temporary. What is permanent is that Guru's essence. That is why I speak of Bhagavān Rām, Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa; all those we worship are that One, and we learn from someone. Guru kṛpāhi kevalam śiṣye ke ānanda maṅgalam. If someone dons an orange robe, or a black robe, or a white robe, and declares, "I am the guru," then I think that person is not correct. Even if he is very knowledgeable, practices intensely, meditates, performs mālās and pūjās, still it can happen. Suddenly it can go in other directions. Therefore, Guru Satguru Dev—he is there, and he resides in every Bhakta's heart. But one to whom the Gurudev has given a duty, Gurujī has given a duty—what does that mean? It means, "Please take care of all my disciples. It is your duty. You work for them." Then, are there real gurus? Truly, otherwise there are so many people. When a Gurujī dies, someone may say, "I am the guru, I am like this," and if asked, "Where is your Gurujī's picture?" he might reply, "Oh, yes, my Gurujī, it is somewhere," while he himself sits surrounded by large pictures of himself. That means he is not a real guru. A guru is enough. There are many different kinds of gurus. When you are learning to cycle, someone who holds the cycle and gives instructions is a guru. One who cooks good food is also a guru. Milking a cow is also a guru. Everyone who does something and imparts knowledge is our guru. Matri deva bhava. The mother is the first. The father is also, and then all friends, and so on. When a mother gives birth to a child, there is only one mother, yet we address every woman as mother. But the real mother is that mother. She knows. It is said: Kṛṣṇa jāne so Gītā. Bhagavān Kṛṣṇa knows. Kṛṣṇa jāne so Gītā. Or, mātā jāne so pitā. That is also guru. Is the real guru your guru? And your guru will be only one. Do not speak of two gurus, three gurus. Other gurus—school teachers, professors—they are also our gurus. But we must practice yoga. Yoga means coming together. Yoga is union with the Gurudev. A good father, good mother, good brother, good sisters, good husband, good wife—all are very good. How does one become aligned with that? Today we have our Gulābjī. He is an advocate of the supreme God. My God, in New Zealand, in Vienna—no, okay. I am always thinking of Vienna because I live in Vienna, so still, not basically, daily, daily... The Supreme Court daily, and he is always going there and returning with so many papers, always. But he is very good, and he has nice children. Please come. So, you would like to, please come. Do you have time for this? Do you have time? Otherwise, you might have come, and I am speaking, and your Bābā Jī is speaking, and I have to go. Please come. It is a very good thing. Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Śrīman Nārāyaṇa, Nārāyaṇa... Bhagavān kī Kṛṣṇa Kanhaiyālā, Mātā, Pitā, Gurudeva kī Jayā. Om Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. Gulabjī, you are in the lecture today. Okay? But let us not merely discuss Vedas and so on, okay? Everyone talks about the Vedas and the Brāhmaṇas and this and that, and then it is gone. Everybody ends up making the same khichḍī, repeating the same thing. Yes or not? Yes. So we want to have something substantial. Yes, the Vedas, Vyāsa, all are great, great. They are my great Vedas. All Vedas. They can give us something different. Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jāya. Śrī Dev Purīṣa Mahādeva Kī Jāya. As Gurujī says, without the Guru, a bhakta cannot exist. But who is a bhakta? Who is a śiṣya? There are two words: Śraddhā and Bhakti. Śraddhā means recognizing that a person is great, that a person is very good. So I wish to honor him. He is a respectable person because he is doing very good work. Good work inspires śraddhā. We think, "I am his follower. Many persons should be his follower." This is śraddhā. This is a very good thing, but it is not enough. I think this is not enough. The second word is bhakti. Before speaking about bhakti... I want to speak about love. Love means he is very good-looking, or she is very good-looking, or he is a very talented person, so he attracts me, or she attracts me, so I want to love him. In another way, a child is very good, very pretty, so I want to love him. In love, we desire no further expression. Love is just like narrowness, but śraddhā is broad. In śraddhā, we use our mind also, but in love, we do not use our mind, only feeling. This is love and śraddhā. In śraddhā, we want many persons to be followers of that person, because I am also a follower. But in love, no one else can love him—only I, only he or she. For me, bhakti is a very special thing. Bhakti is equal to love and śraddhā combined. If we put love into śraddhā, it becomes bhakti. This means bhakti involves the mind also; bhakti has feeling. Both mind and feeling together—this is the great quality of bhakti. We can gain each and everything with bhakti toward the guru. I think we can achieve everything. Svāmī Tulsīdās Jī said, when praying to Hanumān Jī, that a blessing, just like Gurujī's blessing, is special. Once, in the Skanda Purāṇa, in the Guru Gītā, Pārvatī asked Śivajī, "Please tell me, what do you meditate upon? At which point? What are you thinking in your meditation?" Then he told her about the guru: "I meditate on the guru." Thus, the guru is a special entity, not any other. Just as the guru is special, today is Monday, Bhagavān Śiva's day. The whole world is suffering from a pandemic disease. We should always pray to Gurujī, always to Lord Śiva to save us. Everyone should recite the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra. I will also begin. With the permission of Gurujī, I recite the Mahāmṛtyuñjaya Mantra for Gurujī and every bhakta of Gurujī, every bhakta in this āśram, so that Gurujī will save us, Lord Śiva will save us. I believe with the blessing of Gurujī, we are safe. Mantra Moolam Guru Vakya, Moksha Moolam Guru Kripa. Śrī Deep Nārāyaṇ Bhagavān Kī Jai. Śrī Deveśwar Mahādeva Kī Jai. Satguru Svāmī Śrī Madhavānanjī Bhagavān Kī Jai. Śrī Viśvaguru Mahāmaṇḍaleśwar Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Śrī Maheśurānanjī Purīdev Gurudeva Kī Jai. Om Śāntiḥ. Thank you, Dhanyavād Gulābjī. Gulāb means beautiful rose, with many, many colors. There are two colors with the two gulābs, you know. Now you will see my best disciples. Now you will see what it is. In Gulagov, near here. And you can stay a little bit at a distance. Okay, take off your mask. First, Guru Kṛpā, Gurujī. Now we will sing some ślokas from the Guru Gītā.
