The 3rd Sri Swami Maheshwarananda Festival (1/4)

The purpose of human life is to realize the Ātmā within the heart, moving from ignorance to the light of liberation. We are bound to the outer world and identify with thoughts and feelings, believing we are separate individuals. This causes suffering and the cycle of birth and death. The guru provides practices to overcome this false identification and ego. Through devotion and these tools, one can purify the inner self. The goal is to recognize the oneness of the inner self and the Divine, which already exists within. The outer world is manifold, but the inner Puruṣa is one. Do not waste the precious human life in worldly pursuits.

"Only your guru can free you from that. He can lead you from this ignorance to the light—the light of wisdom, the light of knowledge, the light of liberation."

"The eyes are given to you to see the Lord, and the ears we have to listen to wisdom. With our mouths we shall chant the name of God, and with our hands we should give."

Now we will hear a bhajan, "Apsop Diyais Jivanaka." We are praying to God: the whole burden of my life I am laying into your hands. My success is also in your hands. I want to reach you, and for this, I give up worldly happiness and attachment. Of course, I am living in this world, but let me be as pure as a lotus flower on the water. While living in the world, let me be selfless. And when I die, let me be in your hands, for though I live in the world, the world itself is in your hands. The next bhajan we will sing is "Chadāryā Jīnī Re Jīnī" from Śrī Kabīr Dāsjī. He sings about our form, our living being. This shawl, my body, is very fine. At birth, it is filled with divine essence, with prāṇa. In my inner form, I have the cakras, these eight lotuses. It is made into my physical form by the five elements, requiring nine months to be ready. Only through ignorance do we make it dirty without any care. When my shawl was ready, I gave it to my master. He taught me how to keep it clean, and we should not make it dirty from day to day. Through our ignorance, we must purify our soul with prayer and devotion. I want to give it back as pure and spotless as I received it—as cleanly and continuously as I got it. The next bhajan will be "Gurudev Śaraṇāthumārī." I am in thy shelter; please remove my anxieties. Be merciful to me and let me overcome my troubles. Now, mother, father, or friends—nobody is mine. Please save me from this vast net of māyā. I am always diving so deep into this māyā; please save me. Perhaps I am not so good in all my practices, but you are the merciful one. Please remove this dualism, for you are the giver of everything. I am in thy shelter; let me repeat your name. When I met my Satguru Dev, all my doubts were destroyed. Before meeting my Guru Dev, many ways were advised: pilgrimage, fasting. But when I met my God, he showed me the essence. He opened me inside and showed me God who is in my heart. I saw the One, and my flame united with the Divine. Everything is in my heart. My doubts are gone. My karmas were crossed. My inner self and the Eternal are one. This is what we want to reach: that my inner self and the Divine are one. In reality, it is like that, but we are still so bound to the outer world, so bound to our thoughts, feelings, and intellect. We always think we are individuals, that we are not one but separate, and so we fight in the world. But Gurudev tells us the outer world is manifold, yet the Puruṣa, the inner self, is one. Through our practice—through all that Gurudev gives us to practice—we can realize and recognize this. The next bhajan will be "Bhaithumajagore." In this bhajan, holy Gurujī Śrī Svāmī Matavānandajī was speaking to the human: "O brother, awake! Your time is short, and you have been sleeping in ignorance. Therefore you suffer, and again and again you will be born and go through birth and death." Only your guru can free you from that. He can lead you from this ignorance to the light—the light of wisdom, the light of knowledge, the light of liberation. We are caught in this net of attachment and worldliness. But your human life is a precious diamond. It is not easy to obtain a human life. The purpose of life is not to earn money, have a big house, or possess many jewels—not even to gain outer knowledge. The meaning, the sense of human life, is to realize the Ātmā. And you can find it in your heart. Holī Gurujī said, "Mahāprabhujī, my divine master," was awakening this sleeping swan. Do not waste your precious human life. Thank you for watching. God bless you. Now we will chant a bhajan from Śrī Kabīr Dās Jī, "Matakara Mohatu." It is always the same—some form of our false identification. We always hope, or it seems normal to us, to search to quench our thirst for happiness, peace, and joy in the outer world. Yet we know the outer world is always changing; it will not remain. So, get rid of this ignorance, this attachment and these longings. Sing the bhajans to praise the Highest. We always think it is normal to seek happiness in the outer world, and to seek love and to love one another there, because we are so far from our inner self that we search externally. But we have forgotten that it is within us. Kabīr Dās says: "The eyes are given to you to see the Lord, and the ears we have to listen to wisdom. With our mouths we shall chant the name of God, and with our hands we should give." When we follow this, there will be in our heart a source of pure gold. Thank you. Sometimes, now we will sing: "Rājā denā Gurū sā." Sometimes I think there is still a lot of fear in us, even as disciples of a guru, a living master. I wonder, what are we fearful of? Why are we fearful? The guru only gives us practices to liberate ourselves, to get rid of our fears. He gives these practices so we are not caught in fear, sorrows, and troubles. Why do we fear losing that? Perhaps it is fear of what will be then, when we change our own circumstances. But why do we have fear? He says you will be liberated, you will be free—no more troubles, no more sorrows. So let this go. Free yourself and be one with God. I am showing you this way; just do it. One must overcome this 'I', this ego. That is also why we can bow down to our Gurū Dev. Please, let this vibration, this purity of your lotus feet, be your mercy to me. Maybe I do not even want to be in heaven, or to have powers. I just want to be at your lotus feet. We all know this: when we are near our Gurudev, we are so full of joy, and everything is good. Then we need nothing. We are absorbing this energy, this divinity, and then we go home again. Normal life returns, and then we long to meet our Gurudeva again. Now we have this step to go further; we have all the tools, all the practices. Of course, I bow down to my Gurudeva also within myself. He gives us this so we can free ourselves. That is now our duty: to use what we have been given, to use it for ourselves now. Chant, chant. Thank you for watching. Pravo Charanokhi Pada Kamalokhi Rajya Dena Gurusa Moye Charanoky Rajya Dena Dayalu Moye Charanoky, Śrī Dīpa Prabhujī Charana Rajya Mangu, Śrī Dīpa Prabhujī Charana Rajya Mangu. Yehi vinati Lāla Nandakī prabhu, yehi vinati Kāla Nandakī. Rāja dena dhuru samaye caraṇoky, rāja dena dhuru samaye caraṇoky. Caraṇoky pada kamaloky prabhu, caraṇoky pada kamaloky. Now, the next bhajan will be "Kyu rakte ho parāda hamsī." That means: Why are you hiding in front of me? I am full of love for your name, but we know it is not so easy. We have to overcome so many things in our inner world. For that, it is so beautiful to chant bhajans. Bhajans reach our heart. I always want to be at your lotus feet. It seems you are very near, yet on the other side, I cannot reach you. Where are you hiding? I am meditating, but still I cannot see you. But finally, Mahāprabhujī says, "Then I became one with you through the mercy of my Gurudev." And there is nothing else existing. I think this is also perhaps not the first time we have been so aware of this form of God. We are practicing, and we hope to reach something. We will reach it when we overcome identification with our thoughts, feelings, and physical body. We must overcome this identification, and then there can be nothing else. Then we will be in oneness with the Divine. But of course, we can always call upon God, for He should help us—they have to help us.
